What is the difference between the Point Sample and the Average setting of the Color Picker tool (formerly called the Eyedropper tool)? How are these settings to be used?
The Point Sample setting is the default setting for this tool. When you use this setting, the Color Picker tool selects the exact pixel you click on.
When you select the 3-pixel square Average (3x3) or the 5-pixel square Average (5x5) setting, this tool samples this block of pixels and then averages them. These two Average settings work really well when there is some pixel-to-pixel variation in a given color.
