The only time I set a minimum shutter speed is when the Speedlite is attached (1/60s). Even with up to 3 stops of image stabilisation on the lens, I prefer to not go slower than 1/60s when hand holding the camera.
I just feel uncomfortable letting cameras make too many decisions on their own supposedly for my best interests.
The op's 2 images are an example of how it can go wrong when cameras are allowed to think too much for themselves, notwithstanding todays' modern cameras.
