I don't plan to upgrade soon, but if I do, it will be my newest laptop running 8.1. However, I woke up in the middle of the night asking myself if there would be the same trouble setting up a home network, home groups, etc. that there was before v7. That is, if my 8.1 > v10 would still be able to talk to my other computers running v7. I guess I have to ask the Window 10 forums (above) if I really get serious about doing it.

I just received my on-screen alert saying my Windows 10 Upgrade is available. But I won't be upgrading right now though. I'll wait a few months until PSE 14 is released and by then hopefully any upgrade bugs will be sorted out. I also share some of the views of those earlier in this thread who said they won't be rushing into upgrading.

Thanks Craig, that is just SO scary!
I have heard of ransomware before, but couldn't bring myself to believe it existed. I assumed such blatant criminal activity would be actively pursued and obliterated, even if off-shore; that is just too evil to let stand.

Unfortunately ransomware has been around for at least few years as far as I am aware. It's just as difficult to eradicate as phishing scams. Just another example of NEVER, EVER click on links or attachments in emails from unsolicited emails especially if you don't know the sender.

Now that is pure evil! The time is right for them to take advantage of people who don't know any better. I try to stay informed, so I was ready for the guy with the asian accent who said there was a problem with my computer and they were there to help. He didn't like what I said to him!

Craig, thanks for finding this information and sharing it with us. It pays to be an informed consumer.

He didn't like what I said to him! Good for you Esther! Those guys had my mom going for a while, but thankfully she figured it out in time... GRRR!

He didn't like what I said to him! If I have a bit of spare time and not doing anything too urgent I string them along a bit by playing dumb. After they've gone through their song and dance and answered a couple of "dumb" questions from me I then say something like 'oh wait..........but my internet has been disconnected for the last 6 months!!!'. They usually promptly hang up on me I try to waste their time in a polite and not too obvious way because you should remember you're dealing with criminals here and if they already have your phone number, from who knows where, what other details might they have about you.

Depending on my day I usually deal with these sorts of calls in two different ways. If it is a malicious/criminal type of call like the ones mentioned I tend to start talking in a different language claiming not to understand English; that usually throws them off. If however I get one of those sales calls (we call them the clipboard people) on the phone I tend to just ask them if they wouldn't mind holding for a second and then just let the hold music play whilst I get on with whatever I was doing before they interrupted me. The longest somebody was happy to hold was 10 minutes (that's desperation!).
Thanks Craig for sharing the information; whilst most of us are quite informed and savvy about these things, there are unfortunately still lots of people who would be taken in by this.

I sometimes ask them to repeat what they say, telling them I am deaf and have to adjust my hearing aids! Which I am and do.

Yes, I love stringing them along too, but I have to be in the mood for this. One time, the chap was asking something about Windows so said ' sorry, I didn't hear that very well' etc, then the hearing problem, then the hearing aids (as esther, I have hearing probs and wear hearing aids). Then, with him continuing asking about Windows, I claimed that I was surprised he could see that my windows were dirty and how could I clean them up best etc. Then he mentioned surfing (obviously dealing with such a daft person he thought change of tact might help) so, as it was chucking it down with rain at the time, I told him that I wasn't keen on surfing while it was raining so hard etc. This went on for ages and in the end ... he hung up! Another ploy was to say I had Linux. Interestingly, he didn't know what Linux was so I took my time explaining what it was. Well, at least that was stopping him from wasting someone else's time!!! Yes, it's such a shame these people are so desperate to earn money!

I've been getting quite a few of these calls recently telling me that they have noticed that there is a problem with my computer. I deal with them in a similar manner - I tell them (mendaciously) that I don't have a computer! There's usually a silence and then they say 'Oh, it must be your laptop!', to which I reply (truthfully) 'I don't have a laptop'. At this point they hang up! Works every time.
