msmart, Now that you mentioned the Soft Light blending mode I thought of something. I don't remember where I got this but here is a way to lighten a dark photo and make it pop. 1. Create a new layer. 2. Fill it with white. 3. Change the blending mode of this layer to Soft Light. 4. Reduce the Opacity if the effect is too strong. 5. Duplicate the white layer if you want a stronger effect. Step 3. You can also use the 'Overlay' blending mode. I think Overlay often works better. Your mileage may vary.
