Thank you for judging this time Judy and for including my shots among your picks. The ice plant was well below the trail we were walking on and yes it was growing pretty close to the ground there. When I went to look up what kind of flower/plant it was I was surprised it was an ice plant because the type of ice plant I'm used to seeing is not very similar to this variety. The view from the trail was the Golden Gate on one side and the ocean on the other with many wildflowers along the rocky portions . . . this plant really popped out once I took a gander over the railing towards the water below.
Congratulations Helen, Clive, Jim and Dr Joe on your shots being selected as well!

Seems like the grackles I've seen (and I had never seen - or heard - one before a couple years ago) had a longer tail than those in your photos. I They could be great-tailed grackles or boat-tailed grackles...we do not have these. See here and then "Compare with similar species." I am not a huge fan of grackles as they are aggressive at the feeders at our summer place...they chase the finches away. Oh well. Thanks Clive - that makes sense. I've seen Great-tailed Grackles and not the Common species. Interesting that the online guide on Audubon just lists the Common Grackle for my state but I've only seen the Great-tailed. Your link does show them in my area though.

Nice shots Clive - Seems like the grackles I've seen (and I had never seen - or heard - one before a couple years ago) had a longer tail than those in your photos. I remember that as it's most noticeable feature actually. Now I'll have to pay closer attention the next time I run across one.

Mental note to look up how many feet 2 meters is . . The last time I took a photo of a rattler (one I would have walked very close to while taking photos if I hadn't stopped and looked around in time) . . I took photos from around 30 feet away and thought that was close enough ;^)
Great shots as always Clive!

Thanks again to everyone for submitting bridge photos in this challenge. Astoria-Megler Bridge over the Columbia River Well, Dan, you have set the bar a bit higher with this photo. Very nice B&W conversion and composition. Perhaps the cover photo for, Bridges of the United States. Question: What is the purpose of the posts? Tidal-water shellfish structures? Thanks for the kind words Clive. Looks like, per a Google search, the pilings supported a once thriving Fish Cannery industry. If I remember correctly they are on both sides of the Astoria end of this bridge . . . the longest continuous truss bridge in North America according to Wikipedia
