I'm a new member of this forum as a refugee from the previous one that closed in May, and I appreciate the opportunity to learn from the experts. My proficiency with Elements is best described as moderate, primarily working with website images and book covers. I use a Mac running OS 10.8.5 with PSE 12.
My current project is to create an image for a website page that will have seven circles, one in the center and six around the perimeter that overlap the center one. Each of the circles has a single word or short line of text, and I'd like each of the text elements to link to another page on the website.
Rummaging around online has indicated that although Elements doesn't come with a slice tool to do that, it is available with the "extended keyboard shortcut set." I've tried to find the way to run the shortcuts+ script and in a word, I'm stumped at the moment.
If anyone can offer suggestions to help me accomplish this task, I'd really appreciate it.
Thanks in advance,
Tosh (tangomike)

Hi mike. I don't know about extended short cuts but a plugin called elements xxl from thepluginsite has a slice tool. It's not a free plugin but I use lots of the other features which the plugin has. I have no experience of web work so never tried the slice feature. I can't post link as I'm on phone not computer. Hope its of interest

Hi Tosh, welcome to PSE&M! Glad you are here. Now to this issue . . . The Slice tool is a Photoshop tool. However, it is "hidden" in Elements. You just need a little help to bring it out. This is what the above statement is all about. You need an add-on called Elements+ ($12). This add-on offers a script -- extended keyboard shortcut set -- and a Slice tool.
Here is some more information -- About Slicing.
Hope this helps!

Thank you, Shaun, and hello again Sepiana! It's comforting to know that you're here as well to help me over the rough spots as you did many times on the old forum.
Now I've got to sharpen the knives for some creative slicing.
Thanks again to you both.
Tosh

And a follow-up question . . . with Elements+ installed, I've not been able to activate the slice tool. The action mentioned in the video about slicing (tap "C" twice) doesn't work. Do I need a secret decoder ring?

Mike -
You might try contacting the author of the program directly. He's usually very responsive and helpful:

Well, that didn't work too well. I got a delivery failure notice, and the reason given was that I'm apparently in the recipient's BadHelo list, whatever that is.

Hi Mike
Have you ran the script... Shortcuts +script before trying slice script. It says that you need to do this first. Click script icon, find folder called Tweaks and then you should see Shortcuts + script. Then try running the slice thing.
Id have a go my self but I haven't a clue about website things but I do have elements 12 and elements plus installed.
Hope this helps.
Link to pluginsite elements xxl link
They also have a discount running on some of their products
This is from the Pluginsite explaining what elements xxl can do with a slice link

Hi Tosh,
I am not sure what the problem is. Anyway here are the steps.
1. Activate the Scripts.
2. Run the Shortcuts+ script.
3. Press the C key twice to bring up the Slice tool. The Slice tool will be nested with the Crop tool and will have the same shortcut.

Thank you, Sepiana. That did it. And now to following the steps in the About Slicing pages, which are a little intimidating at first glance. The adventure begins . . .

Initial trials with the slice tool didn't work out as expected, so I've got some trial and error ahead of me.
The task involves an image with six circles arranged evenly around a seventh such that each of the six circles represents a major program of a project. The purpose of the image is to graphically illustrate the scope and breadth of the effort and allow each of the six text elements to serve as a link to a separate page with detailed information about the various areas.
Using the slice tool worked very well to create the slices, but I'm either not using the slice options dialog and/or saving the image as a web page correctly.
That may be caused by trying to stick with my original concept for this, which was to have the circle diagram be an image on a webpage as opposed to being a webpage all by itself. The idea was for the page to have some introductory text above the diagram to explain the project in general terms and allow visitors to use links on the diagram to get from there to each of the detail pages.
A work-in-progress for sure, but with the help of this forum I've at least gained the knowledge to explore the slice function and hopefully learn what I need to create the effect I'm looking for.
Thank you again.
Tosh

Sepiana,
I'm confident the problems I'm having aren't a result of using Elements+ rather than the counterpart function in Photoshop.
Since I can create the slices and get to the slice options dialog, the mistakes are in following the directions from that point on and saving the result as a webpage. I'm stumbling around a little at that point because whether I'm looking at the About Slicing tutorial you showed me or going to the full documentation sources, there are some actions included that assume a level of knowledge and expertise I don't yet have.
As with everything I've taught myself how to do with the assistance of others in both Photoshop and InDesign, I've worn out the UNDO function more than once . . . =;^)
