Oh, the second is fantastic! That's one for the wall. I love the beautiful gradient of pastel on the sky and the silky water!
You are almost there with the moon picture. Just a little longer shutter speed.

Thanks, Marianne.......not sure how long it will be until I'm ready to tackle the moon again! I received a lot of good advice but I couldn't seem to apply it........and then I get so exasperated I can't think straight!

Helen--I sympathise. I used the settings recommended in the video and was very disappointed with my results. On the other hand, your second image is a winner! The colours are beautiful, and you captured the surf perfectly.
I think I read somewhere that there's another super moon later this month, and perhaps by that time we'll both be over our exasperation and ready to try again. agg

Helen, I can sympathize, as it took me a while to figure out how best to shoot the moon all in preparation for the lunar eclipse that took place in early April this year.
If it helps at all here are the settings I used with my 70-300mm Canon lens shot at 300mm focal length:
Exposure 1/4000 sec at f 5.6 ISO 1600 No flash
I would recommend that you try this as a starting point and adjust as necessary. Obviously if you have a longer lens use that and I am sure you are using a tripod. I don't have a shutter release cable (on my list to buy), but used the self timer set at 2 seconds instead. The problem I usually grapple with when I shoot the moon from our house is the light pollution, especially as we have a couple of street lamps right near the house (great for security but crappy for night time shots near home).
It's all about perseverance, keep at it and keep experimenting with your settings until you have something you are happy with.

Simone, my problem was that I didn't want a shot of the moon by itself but wanted it to be part of a scene. There was good info shared here and on FB but it was so dark on the beach by time it finally came up....close to 9pm that all the things that I thought would work didn't. That being said, I have no doubt that if some of our members had been standing next to me my story would have had a happier ending : )
