OK, I have been out exploring the "wide universe" of scrapbooking kits. Wow! I can figure out what most things are, papers, masks, textures, embellishments and templates are pretty easy to realize what they are for. But there are some that I don't quite get. They are 1. Pockets 2. Brads 3. Clusters Some guidance would be appreciated! cjt

Hi cjt, in the paper scrapbooking world, brads are generally small metal fasteners that are used to attach photos and other things to the background page, so in the digital world they are just digital images of those fasteners. Same thing with pockets, a paper scrapbooker would glue a pocket to a page and then place something in it that could be removed and looked at, eg. a movie ticket, receipt paper money etc. Clusters could just be a group of similar looking mages, like flowers. I’m sure others will be along to help with these interpretations.

I hope this helps cjt...I personally have never used pockets but for want of a better explanation they are like opaque envelopes and you place them on your page and place an item to look as if it’s popping out of the envelope. Brads are usually round objects which can represent the head of a nail or tack or can be ornate with say like a flower or design on top and they can be used as a decoration or to pin an item in place on the page if you follow me. Clusters are usually made up of a collection of individual flowers and leaves etc gathered together into a would you believe ‘cluster’. A cluster could also be made up of different items all placed together to illustrate something. I will look through my stuff and see if I can come up with a visual representation of clusters to give a better idea of what I’m talking about.

Ladies, thanks for the explanations! I have examples of all of these items mentioned in the kits I have purchased, so I know what they look like, just really couldn't grasp how to use them. It looks like clusters are a number of "things" assembled in PSE or PS, then just flattened and sent out! Use like an embellishment? cjt

I do recall that some years ago I was at a workshop event featuring a variety of things to do. I did one on birding, someone did one on baking, and a couple of gals did scrapbooking and had laid out about three tables of stamps, ribbons, and all kinds of other things. These were all done on paper, so these would be "real" scrapbookers? cjt

Shadowing makes a big difference to a cluster especially if it's a floral cluster. Good shadow work can bring a cluster to life giving it depth and dimension.

so these would be "real" scrapbookers? LOL...yes I suppose you could put it that way. I would rather say the original scrappers until the digital world came along...

I need to make a quick observation here before I forget it. I have been poking around on a number of the sites where you purchase kits, papers, etc, etc. What I also find are written tutorials on how to use these things and ideas. This is a good thing for me, as my hearing is pretty much gone, so, a video with a sound track is not useful. Yes, many are also close captioned, but, it is not easy to follow the video and try to read the caption at the same time! So, written and illustrated tutorials are a real plus for me. This includes the number of well thought out answers you folks give, many with examples, screen shots, and so forth. Just sayin! cjt

Use of brads that look like bolts/screws -- as already been suggested - shadows create realism Use of style to make text look etched Font: www.dafont.com/bon-jovi.fontLicense plate created by unknown artist This was my Bon Jovi phase - Although I knew who he was, I didn't know his music until 15 years ago. I like his old stuff...
