The first Thursday in the month is when we kick off the month's B&W challenge. I was away and could not post yesterday. This month's challenge will be bridges. But we have rules this month. The "rules" are: 1) Only bridges intended for wheeled vehicles with four or more wheels, i.e., cars trucks, trains or wagons. So please no footpath bridges or large suspension bridges intended for people, bikes or horses only. 2) Some bridges are huge and it might be difficult (or not artistically desirable) to get all of a bridge in the photo and that is fine. But I am looking for photos in which you can see the overall style and structure of the bridge. So please, no arty closeups of structure. (We have all done that.) If you wish, please share your conversion process. I normally desaturate in ACR and then used a gradient map using black as the foreground and white as the background. (Layer>>Adjustment layer>>Gradient map.) Tonight, I merely desaturated in ACR and made some tweaks to highlights, shadows and contrast. Confederation Bridge linking the province of Prince Edward Island with the province of New Brunswick on the mainland. Here. Abandoned bridge by the Atlas Coal Mine at East Coulee, Alberta The Lethbridge Viaduct, commonly known as the High Level Bridge. Here.

Great theme, Clive. I have trawled back through my old pictures, this seems to fit the bill although I'm fairly sure I would have posted it in the past; Tower Bridge in London: Tower Bridge long exposure by AlexR!, on Flickr I cannot recall the processing I did then, I suspect I would have done it in Silver Efex.

Thanks alexr. Very nice. Slow shutter speed to soften the water and clouds...nice separation of the bridge with the background. Not been there since 1974.

Good choice of theme. Seeing those rail bridges reminded me of one taken a few years back of the Makatote Viaduct in New Zealand. I did the conversion in Lightroom using one of the B&W profiles applied to the RAW file. Tony

Great choice of subject, Clive--and I like the rules!
This is a deserted (obviously) railroad bridge across the road from the quaint railroad station in New Hope, PA. It shows why the train only goes in the opposite direction! The railroad runs many special short trips--some fall color tours, a Christmas ride with Santa and an Easter Bunny ride, to name a couple. It's very popular! The only train running right now is Steam Locomotive No.40...a favorite for many years! www.newhoperailroad.com/

Thanks to everyone for your great photos. We all have bridge photos, eh? Keep 'em coming folks. This is a deserted (obviously) railroad bridge Vicki. Nice shot. I had to laugh. Somewhere (I think Coast Rica) we saw a similar deteriorated bridge except it was on a "highway" and we had to drive across it. I'll see if I can find photos. I posted a photo of an abandoned RR bridge but it was not until VickiD posted another RR bridge that I was reminded of an old vehicle bridge that had seen far better days. One more bridge for today. Unlike my first one, this one is VERY busy! It's the Ravenel Bridge in Charleston, SC. It was taken on our last real photo workshop which was wonderful!
NOTE: There are details you can't see unless you enlarge this one.
