I worked for Norfolk Southern at Danville Yard for a while; I knew a powerful lot about railroads before I started and a lot more after being there.

A fact that not many know is that there are a whole lot more rail-cars in America than there are parking places for them.

Thousands upon thousands of empty rail-cars are constantly being shuffled back and forth in revenue trains as there is just no place to park them.

If the greenie energy freaks knew this; they would be in a panic.

The reason for this is due to our government, in all their greedy wisdom, in the 1970s, putting a high tax on every foot of trackage owned.

In response to this, railroads went on a spree of abandoning thousands of usable and useful lines, ripping up track and abandoning them; as, the tax was far more than the income the tracks were producing.

This was all brought about when they figured out that, unlike trucking companies who use public highways for their business, railroads actually own and hold deed to their "roads" and therefore were not paying any highway usage taxes or fuel taxes (and should not have to since they own the road).

And, as they own their roads, the railroads build and maintain them with railroad men and money; and, get things up and running a lot quicker.
