Had a bit of trouble getting this one to produce a result I was happy with - still not there but here's where I've got to - I did replace the background and added an underpainting filter to soften the lines a bit. Here are the before and after so far ... portrait from files Tony

After looking at the Andy Gotts portraits. I wanted to see if I could create a gritty black and white. I duplicated the pencil layer and used a multiply blend mode of about 40%. I took it into CE6 and converted to B/W and added a touch of bleach by-pass. Then I converted the original image to black and white and placed the watercolor portrait over it and blended together.

Thank you for giving it a try Tony. I don’t see much evidence of the Glowing Edges, which I took as an important component. The intention was a stylized version of the original, with rough “pencil lines” outlining the basic features, and a softer color wash that didn’t reveal too many details. At least that is how I saw it. I too tried a few portraits and ended up discarding most of them. One thing that did seem to work was to resize the image down to 150 ppi. That seems to make the filter effects more pronounced.

You really achieved your target of dark and gritty Helen, well done! The charcoal painterly effect is stunning!

Thanks, Tom. I liked the way it came out, too. May try another before this challenge ends.

I can see them now, Lillias. Hope you can, too. Thanks for the heads up Helen, yes it appears we are back in action again. You have got the dark/gritty look off pat now. It's amazing the difference it makes.
