I'm going to start the new year by asking anyone who is interested in hosting the Black and White Challenge to let me know as we have a vacancy and can always use more hosts. It's not too onerous a job - just pick a subject suitable for rendering in B&W every few months. For this months black and white challenge I picked Food as the subject. That might seem a little odd because colour is quite an important characteristic of food but so is shape and texture and these can certainly be emphasised in black and white. Can't do much about taste with a camera but perhaps a good image of food can evoke an imagined taste. As always the images should be your own either current or from your archives and should be monochrome. Conversion from colour can be any way you choose and it's always good to mention what you used when you post. Here are some examples: It's winter here so salad growing moved indoors - here's a shot of a current crop of hydroponic "greens" in black and white. Converted in camera (using the Fuji Acros film simulation) No need for colour to show the shape and texture of these garlic bulbs (converted using a Lightroom preset) Most food comes from farmers so here's a shot of corn harvesting - was a dull day so the clouds were added in On1. (converted in Nik Silver Efex) Looking forward to seeing your black and white edibles! Tony

Checked my phone while we were out today so grabbed a couple of pictures at dinner. Should be a fun and different challenge. Black and white conversion with NIK SE 6

Glad you checked your phone! Great examples of how B&W brings out the shape and texture. Hope it was tasty too ….

For this months black and white challenge I picked Food as the subject. Great subject Tony. Thanks. Give me a day or two while. Dilo's had to close two years ago as their restaurant was in a rental building that was being torn down for the new town office. They were ready to retire anyway. Mom and dad made fresh, from-scratch dough every morning. The raw image was desaturated (and other level tweaks) in ACR and also used an adj layer gradient map to tweak levels.

They look very tasty too - wondered for a while what I was looking at but then looked up Dilo’s and I’m guessing they are pizzas ready for the oven. Sounds like they haven’t completely retired from cooking according to their FB page. Tony

Sounds like they haven’t completely retired from cooking according to their FB page. The building is no more. So mom and dad must be using a commercial kitchen elsewhere. I did not know this. Thanks. I took a lot of photos the week they closed and made this poster. If you scroll all the way down to April 17, 2021 you will see the closing notice. The bldg was renovated just before they closed...and then torn down to make way for a far-too-opulent town office bldg.

By show of hands. Is coffee a food? Yea or nay? These are almost black dark French roast beans that are oily and hard to photograph without shine.

"Lo, How a Rose E'er Blooming" Great symmetry and a nice touch of colour - the B&W apples look good too!. And rose petals are edible so count as food although those ones maybe not ... Tony

That's quite a collection - of radishes I would guess. - interesting patterns from the roots that show up well in B&W Tony

I'll start off with a tin of soup from the cupboard. Then some fresh Dungeness crab from the farmers market this morning. And finish the trio with a cup of coffee. All photos shot this week for the theme. Fuji X100V, B/W in-camera, contrast tweaks in ACR. Thanks for the theme Tony. I'm still hungry, so there may be another one to follow. ;-)
