But it seems I hadn't So although I do have all my photos, documents, scrapbooking supplies, videos & music ,unfortunately since my recent HD crash I have lost all my fonts, my Photoshop Elements Catalog & my Microsoft Access databases (600 names & addresses!) Plus for some reason I can't find all my saved plugins - Elements +, Topaz, Perfect Photo Suite & loads of actions, some purchased, some free. I do have some of the download licence keys on emails so presumably I'll be able to dl those again or contact the companies concerned? The thought of losing 10 years worth of Organiser cataloguing, plus all those carefully collected fonts and my online address book makes me feel so frustrated..... Bayla

For example, Topaz and Perfect Photo Suite. Just download their trial versions and enter the license keys.

Oh Bayla, I'm so sorry to hear what you have lost, particularly the Access Db. Although it's a life time's cataloguing, at least you still have the photos. I use Access for Membership for a charity, about 550 entries, possibly similar to yours. Because of the importance of it, I have to say, I try to keep an up-to-date back up on just an SD card, (on my External Drive it's not so up-to-date) and I email an up-to-date file to another volunteer from the charity to keep 'off site' Emailing it frequently is really easy, just have to remember! She also emails me her 100-Club list too (for same charity), so it works well. In fact, she recently had a hard drive failure and her computer died. She was unable to retrieve her files so has been able to send the drive away and they've been able to copy the files off (but had to take the drive to bits to do it! I'd never heard of anything like this) I didn't like to ask her how much it cost her as I would imagine, being so very specialised (dust-free environment etc) I can't think it would be cheap I do hope you can retrieve most of what you had, by one way or another. I do feel for you Julie

Well the good news is that I found the Access database files! For some reason when I searched under the file name it didn't come up but when I looked on my back up HD there they were! Also found a file called 'Unused Desktop Items' which contained copies of pngs, xml files and atn files for loads of actions! I've have successfully got back all my Topaz, OnOne Essentials, Perfect Photo Suite and a number of other paid for programs. Waiting to hear from Andre about Elements+ I had a load of bought actions (Photoblast) from John Wright at EZActions - can't seem to find that website anymore And how do you dl Grant's Tools? Can't seem to find them online either! My computer guy is going to see if he can somehow get my fonts folder off my old HD, ditto the Organiser Catalog.....though he doesn't hold out much hope Not so bothered about the Organiser cos I'm seriously thinking of switching over to using Lightroom instead......but I want those fonts sooooo badly! Can go to bed feeling a wee bit happier than a few hours ago! Bayla

And how do you dl Grant's Tools? Can't seem to find them online either! Grant's website with the different versions of Grant's Tools is no longer up and running. Here are the files you need. They should work in Elements version 7 and above. Attachments:Grants Tools.zip (53.38 KB)

Bayla....have been following your thread but don't have much to offer other than empathy for your situation.....so glad you are able to go to bed feeling a bit better about things. Hopefully your computer guy will amaze himself and be able to retrieve more than he thought.

Sepiana,
Thanks for the zip file. Took me a while to remember to show hidden files and they've installed like a dream and so fast (think it must be due to the new ssd that I have - really can tell the difference in speed! Notice that there are fewer tools than I had - I realise that I don't need the guides or the Masking tool, but really will miss the Transform Selection Tool or it there a way to do that in PSE9 as well?
Helen,
Thanks for your kind words. At least I haven't lost any photos! That would have been disastrous.

Sorry to hear of all the problems Bayla.
I take it you were backing up the photos, but not using the PSE built-in backup tool? That will backup the catalog as well. I know Adobe puts the catalog in a strange location and not with your photos (unless you tell it to). If you stay with the Organizer (or shift to Lightroom) I highly suggest putting your catalog file on your data drive, not where Adobe defaults it.
Julie's comment is worth echoing - you can send your drive out to places to get the data off it. I don't know the costs, but it can be done if you really want the information back.

So Andre got in touch with me and I now have Elements+ back & running Discovered I had the PhotoBlast (EZactions) downloads saved but when I try to install them I get so far & then this error message pops up: Any idea what this means & how I can install these actions? Bayla

This doesn't look like to me it is an Elements problem as you have been able to install other actions. It looks like the culprit is the installer file (corrupted?). I am not familiar with this action. Can you stop the Wizard during the installation process and manually guide it to Elements? I have just thought of something else. As a rule of thumb, actions (.atn files) written for Elements 6 and earlier won't work in Elements 7 and above. Starting with Elements 7, Adobe made some changes concerning actions -- structure, installation path, etc. Did you ever use these actions in Elements 9 before?
EDIT: You can make such actions work in more recent versions of Elements but this will require some tweaking.

Sepiana,
I too wondered if it was because I had these actions originally for PSE6 - but when I upgraded to PSE9, all my actions magically transferred, including these ones (not sure how!)& they were working last week when my HD crashed. I still have my copy of PSE6, I might try installing that and see what happens!

That's interesting. I had never heard of actions automatically transferring from one version of Elements to the other. Each version of Elements is an independent one.

Sepiana,
Well this is strange. I definitely had these particular actions in PSE9 before the HD failure which necessitated a new HD and reinstallation of PSE9. I KNOW I'm not imagining it because I was working on an image a few weeks ago and have saved it under the file name 'PhotoBlast_Pro_Sepia' so I would remember which action I used on it. And this is not the first time I have reinstalled this particular copy of PSE9 cos I had to do it when I got a new computer only 18 months ago!
So, I installed PSE6 on my computer and these particular actions installed fine. I then went in and copied the .atn files and the .png files to PSE9 and then took an existing .xml metadata file and wrote one for each of these actions....and now I have them up and running in PSE9!! Only thing I can't get them to do is to show up under PhotoBlast - but they show up under Show All.

Starting with Elements 7, Adobe changed the format of the .xml files. This may explain why these actions are showing up under "Show All". You need to write the .xml files following the new format. Go to the photo effects folder in Elements 9. The actions which come with Elements have accompanying .xml files. Just use this format.
