Scottish Summer Holidays in years gone by...those were the days. When I was young, which wasn’t yesterday, we all looked forward so much to our annual holiday which consisted of a whole two weeks in July. Families worked all year round saving up for this special treat! In my area it was called the ‘Glasgow Fair Holiday’ and the first day of those two weeks was usually the signal for the rain to start and the holiday could end up a bit of a wash out. But did we let it dent our enthusiasm...NO we did not...lol. The sun did shine sometimes and there was always the chance that it would this time too... My folks used to book up somewhere down the coast. The Scottish colloquialism being ‘goin’ doon the watter fur the ferr’. Which being interpreted meant that the place we were travelling to was on the coast and we would see the water and maybe even be able to enter the water with our bare feet for a paddle. Oh the delights. The image seen below is of my sister and myself on one of those holidays. Although windy it appears to have been one of the nicer days... Clipart from Hiclipart.

Enjoyed reading your "story", Lillias....it reminded me of my summer vacations growing up as a child and inspired me to create this page. It came together rather quickly as I have these pictures hanging up in my bathroom and I purchased a Sea Life kit from Anna Aspnes a number of years ago. The camera is from StockSolo.

This was created 16 years ago for a project called "All About Me" at a now defunct Scrapper's website. Each week, we had a theme and we had to make a layout to fit the theme. I do not know which particular theme this was for because the jpg has been renamed, but maybe the title "Roots" gives a clue. This project was the best of all the projects I did - because I now have many historical layouts about my life. I am very thankful to the wonderful 'girls' who ran that website. My mother told me the doctors wanted to cut off her leg because the ankle would not heal. How accurate her memory was is questionable, but she said her dad would not put his 'x' on the paperwork, so she wore that cast for a year. Thank goodness they didn't do anything drastic because, although one leg was a couple of inches shorter and skinnier than the other - and she limped all her life - she never ended up in a wheelchair.
In that upper right photo, the uncle on the far right is a splitting image of my brother when he was that age. Gotta love genetics.
The uncle standing next to my mother in the bottom photo died soon after that photo was taken. I found the gravestones of my maternal grandfather and my great uncle, who died about 3 years apart, on social media. I have never been able to find those photos again and I did not contact the person who posted the photos when I first found them. I am really sorry for my lack of follow-through - that person was probably a relative of mine and I missed an opportunity to find out more about my roots.

Not that I have a lot of photos to look back on but I find it can be a bitter sweet experience looking at those that I do have. Wishing now, when it’s too late, that I had asked my parents a lot of questions about our family.
Great page Janice. Lovely to have those photos especially of your mum as a child. So glad she was able to keep her leg.

Lillias - I know just what you mean. The keeper of the history, my brother, died recently and now I have no one to check with when I have a question. I never sat down with my parents (my dad died when I was 22) to discuss the past. My brother lived with my mom all her life, so he was my go-to person. Now, the history is lost. My niece is about to send me photos from my brother's house, so I will have that. I wonder what memories I will find in those photos.

I don't know if I have ever posted this page before.... This is my Maternal Grandmother and Grandfather on their honeymoon, no idea where they went. My Grandfather died when I was a baby so I have no memories of him, but my Grandmother lived until she was 99½ and she was a very big part of my life growing up. The safety pin alludes to the fact that they had a baby on the way, a fact that came to light one time when one of the great grandchildren was doing a school project and family tree and discovered that the dates didn't quite add up.

My uncle was a amateur photographer and I have 10 photos from this day. Of course, they were black and white, but I changed them to sepia because I wanted to use the tan/brown color scheme - and besides, I think b/w is harsh. Now, I'm wondering if using the original b/w would've made the photos clearer on my page. We were at Grandma's house for Easter and my mother was on the porch looking down at me while my aunt was down with me at the flower bed. I can just hear my mother saying 'don't pick the flowers' - but just look at that innocent little girl - she wouldn't pick the flowers. I just love how everyone dressed up for the holidays. When I originally made this layout, I had the wrong necklace on the page. Finally realized my mistake and corrected it. I gave the necklace to my granddaughter for her first birthday. Wow - that necklace is over 70 years old... (how can that be - I'm still a youngster) When we were doing this project, I tried to make coordinating layouts so they could be put side-by-side in an album. Alas, I never had an album printed. In those days, I printed at home and put them in ready-made albums - but I didn't even do that for these layouts. Digital is all I have. And yes, I have them on more than one source. You can tell I was big into making my title with a background and layer styles. As I look back, there are many layouts using this technique. You know -- this is what digital scrapbooking means to me - the chance to preserve memories in more than a photo album. You can add journaling and titles - AND memories.

I had originally made the layout with b/w, but I didn't really like the yellow background. I'm not sure the clarity is better, but the wrong necklace in on this page - so I'm glad I kept it. Now that I have another granddaughter - who is turning one this year - I'd better find a nice chain to go with this pendant.
