Tanzaku Format
*Album shared with Glenn's permission
We are going to try something a bit different for the month of June. In Japanese culture tanzaku are long strips of colored paper that are often used for poems, paintings or for people to write wishes on.
I have recently been introduced to using the format for photography by Glenn McDonnell. You can see his Flickr album here.
In a way to visualize the image while shooting Glenn tried putting two strips of transparent tape on to his camera LCD display. He has also recommended the Viewfinder Preview app by Adam Fowler for use on both iPads and iPhones. It allows you to add a sensor ratio of 36.4 x 7.5 mm.
For our purposes, think of this like a vertical panorama. You will want to create an image that flows from top to bottom.
To create my starter images for this challenge I looked through my files to find pictures/or sections of pictures that would lend themselves to this “top-to-bottom” presentation. Overall I wanted them to create a feeling of peace, or visual harmony. Not being technically proficient the best way for me to do this was to use a template. I would then use a clipping mask to add my chosen image to the template. You can also create a 7.5 x 36.4 crop preset for cropping your image. I will attach my template after my images if you would like to use it. Whether you decide to add a frame is up to you. You will notice that Glenn did not,
I hope you will have as much fun experimenting with this month’s theme as I have had.
After viewing posts and seeing an issue with the usual size members frequently use. tonyw did some investigating for us. He suggests sizing your image to fit between 800px x 800px. to have your image show without the need to scroll. If you already posted I will leave it up to you if you want to edit your posted image.
