Hi all,
Since the last batch import of pictures and MP4 files (all came from my smartphone btw) my catalog crashes on startup. I've tried to repair the catalog and other tips and tricks I've found here and on other sites but nothing seems to have helped so far. I narrowed the problem to one of the MP4 files by creating a new catalog and importing the same files I used for the last import. The pictures import fine but when I import the MP4's it crashes.
Is there a way to remove these files from the catalog without having to open it? The only idea I came up with (this moring) that I haven't tried yet is to create another catalog, import all the files that were in the old one except the ones that I suspect that cause the problem and then add the xml files of the "problem" catalog. Would that be a possible sollution?
Hope someone can point me in the right direction to find a sollution that doesn't involve me adding all tags to the 20.000+ files...
Have fun!
Joost

Joost Welcom Joost, Your problem is not exactly a usual and typical catalog issue. From what you say, you have already tried the solution to keep the shift key pressed while lauching the organizer, then choosing 'repair'. So, I don't see any way to remove 'problem' files if you can't open the catalog. What you can try is to test if the organizer 'freeze' when attempting to open the catalog is due to a problem in the database itself or in the accessory files and folders. First locate your catalog. Since you can't open the organizer with your corrupt catalog, create a new empty one (from the menu you get by holding the shift key). The location is shown in the menu Help > System Information. The corrupt catalog should be under the same master folder. Copy the corrupt catalog folder where you want. Delete everything except the catalog.pse14db file. Double click on this file to open the organizer with the 'reduced' catalog. You can also use the 'shift' key to launch the organizer by browsing to the new catalog location. You can choose the 'repair' option. What happens if you try that?

Thanks for the quick reply!
At first it looked as if it worked but then it crashed again. Later today I'll try to experiment a bit more with this but for now it doesn't seem to be a (final) sollution...

Later today I'll try to experiment a bit more with this but for now it doesn't seem to be a (final) sollution... As I said, this is mostly a troubleshooting step. If it works, that is if you can open and repair the database, it's also a real solution since it lets you remove the offending files from the catalog. All your tagging, rating, captions, albums, stacks and version sets will be restored. You'll lose people recognition, visual similiarity... Otherwise, I don't see any other solution than re-importing your files in a new catalog. If you have 'written metadata to files', you'll recover tags, captions, ratings, but not albums, stacks or version sets.

Do I understand your post correctly if I say that creating a new catalog only will need a new import of the files and that Elements will than reconnect all the tags? Basically that is the most important thing for me.
I have found another sollution this morning: for the first time I'm happy with my slightly crappy backup tool. It didn't backup the Elements folder for quite some time so I have a pre-crash version of the catalog that I can use now. But it's over a year old so still a lot of work. If the "create new" option as you suggested works that would be a lot better...
