I certainly have seen 'white paper' icons when a program hasn't been assigned for the default. I haven't. And I have been using Elements since version 4. Neither have I seen this happen with Photoshop. Let's just hope you are on the right track. The important thing here is to solve this mystery.
BTW, did you notice arabma's screen shot shows the same problem with TIFF files? This should not be happening.

Hi Sepiana I can't see where you saw any TIFF files on Arabma's screen shots. What have I missed? Julie

Hi Sepiana I can't see where you saw any TIFF files on Arabma's screen shots. What have I missed? Julie First screen shot, first column of "blank" thumbnails, bottom thumbnail, name of file -- Union Hill 1.tif (as far as I can tell).

Julie First screen shot, first column of "blank" thumbnails, bottom thumbnail, name of file -- Union Hill 1.tif (as far as I can tell). So blurred, even with magnification, so possibly. It looked like another space then 1 after it too. I accept your better judgement and knowledge J

Have you tried clicking on "More apps" (at the bottom of the dialog box you've shown on the right)?

Wow - those screens are amazingly different than in Windows 7. I have no helpful ideas, but I can see why you are confused.

Nerver gives me the option for pse 7 or eight!
arabma,
My apologies! I am confused. I thought the problem was with Elements 8. You hadn't mentioned Elements 7. Is this something new?
Yes! It's like they don't even exist! I can work with both programs though From what I understand, you can open your files in both Elements 7 and Elements 8 with no problems. The problem is when you try to use the "Open with" command. This leads me to believe the problem is not an Elements one but a Windows one.
There have been reports that sometimes the "Open with" command won't "see" an application, no matter what you do. Two solutions have been suggested:
1. Make some changes in the Registry.
OR
2. Install a 3rd-party utility to do the job.
However, I don't feel comfortable pursuing either one of these routes. First, going into the Registry is a risky business if you don't know your way around; one little mistake will create havoc with your computer. Second, there is evidence that this 3rd-party utility works with Windows Vista and Windows 7; I am not sure it will work with Windows 10.
Taking all of this into consideration, I believe it would be a good idea to take the ball to the Microsoft/Windows field. Have you thought about posting in the Windows 10 forums?
