An update on this discussion:
I recently installed the FREE version of FreeMake Video Converter and have just put it through my first test.
In order to make a scientific comparison, I thought I would convert the same Canon video clips that took Windows Live Movie Maker so long to render and see how it fared after being converted to .WMV
I just finished converting the first clip: 3:41 long, Canon original size 863,926 KB, new .WMV size 96,422 KB, about 1/9th the size of the original file.
I am going to convert the remaining two clips and run them all three through WLMM and see if things won't be a lot quicker.
On examining the capabilities of FreeMake Video Converter, I see that it can also convert to DVD; seeing as how sooner or later whatever I put in WLMM needs be converted to watchable DVD in Windows DVD Maker, would it not be advantageous to just convert to DVD in the first place and skip the .WMV conversion ?
Thanks for reading.

I haven't produced a video in many months, but just thinking about it leads me to what files you can import. That would not have been my first choice. A DVD seems to me the final product that you export.
Have you had an opportunity to look at the website muvipix dot com? They may have some solutions for you.

Would someone please click on that forum link and see if it takes them to the actual forum or to a home page full of ads. Up until about three days ago, I had been looking at that forum several times a day; then, three days ago, I decided to join up so I could ask some questions. I went through the usual process of joining a forum group, got my confirmation e-mail, along with a link within the e-mail that would make me a member. I clicked the link and was welcomed and congratulated for becoming a new member; all seemed fine. Then, I clicked on "forum" and it took me to a home page; I clicked the forum button on that home page and it just refreshed the home page. I clicked on the forum bookmark in both FireFox and IE and still went to the home page. I came back to this site and clicked the link Sepiana had provided and that as well took me to the home page. This has been going on now for about three days. Usually, when a site is down for repairs/upgrades, it is back up and running in twelve hours or so. It seems to me that when I joined it just made it impossible for me to ever see the forums again. Could the problem be on my side of things ? Thanks for reading.

Hi BuckSkin,
I just clicked on the link and it took me to the forum.
Perhaps try and clean your browser's cache. If that doesn't help perhaps try another browers; I just used Google Chrome and got there ok.

Hi
Yes, the link takes me to the forum too. Using Firefox 43.0.3
May I just ask a question re videos? What is the best, universal file type to have to burn to DVD, please? I've no real experience for this so I would just burn as MP4 but I'm not sure if that's the best file type. The disc is going to some people who I don't know and don't know what equipment they will play the DVD on.
Many thanks

The link takes me to the forum. I checked it using IE 11 as well as Safari (on my iPhone). This is what I get.

Thanks, guys, for checking it out for me.
I could go straight to the forum until I registered; now I can't get there at all.
It appears the problem is on my end; I will delete my cache and see what happens.
Thanks so much.

After I get done putting my movie together in Windows Live Movie Maker, I then load the resulting .wmv file into Windows DVD Maker and it generates the DVD plus it puts a project file in "my video" folder that is a .msdvd file. Whereas the beginning file is about 10GB and the .wmv file is about 1GB, the .msdvd file is like 500 bytes; all three file types open and play with Windows Media Player (I think) and I can see no difference whatsoever between the three different file types. My analog video capture device, "TOTMC EZ-Cap", and accompanying ArcSoft ShowBiz program saves the digitized video as MP2-.mpg and likewise I can see no difference in picture quality. I know none of this answered your question.............

Thanks BuckSkin I couldn't follow some of your post but don't worry about it. I'm a total newbie re video editing and I've just installed (yesterday evening) Premiere Elements 12 which I've had for a couple of years and never used. However, I would like to edit some of my video of my parents etc which will then be copied to DVD so that other relatives can see them. Unfortunately, it seems .avi files won't play - just a black screen. Also, I will be putting a different video, edited by another person for me, on to DVD for someone else and I just wondered what file type might be best. Not everyone can play MP4s, as far as I know, depending on their equipment. I wondered if there was an equivalent file type, a bit like pdf for documents etc

storkington hit the nail on the head; I cleaned out my cookies and history cache and then went straight to the forum page; THANKS !!!
Julie/Squirrel2014, do you have Windows DVD Maker? ; it can be downloaded for free if you do not already have it.
The DVDs I have made using Windows DVD Maker have thus far played on various old-Joe DVD players, some players twenty-years-plus old and some about ten years old.

Hi Simone
I'm now learning to use Premiere Elements 12 which came with PSE 12. If I remember correctly, buying them both was actually cheaper at the time than buying only PSE. Prices were very much reduced at that time - I found the receipt in the box yesterday when I took out the disc to install it.
Yes, I appreciate I can get Windows Movie Maker off the internet but, as I hadn't used that either, I decided to learn to use Premiere Elements!
Is one of these better than the other, by any chance? Would there be an advantage to using Windows Movie Maker rather than Premiere?
Thanks Julie

Julie -
I haven't worked with either program, but I think it's a good bet that Premiere Elements is far more full-featured (with the accompanying steeper learning curve) than the Windows app.
