You can also grab a ready-made deckle frame (Graphics/Content panel). Well what do you know, I never knew that was in the Graphics/Contents Panel... Sepiana I like the video you provided the link for showing how to do the deckle effect. I must save that one.
That panel is worth a visit. I am always discovering new things. And, if you want a scalloped edge and not a deckle one, you will also find it there. (However, I don't think Tom is talking about a scalloped edge.)

No I definitely don't think he is looking for a scalloped edge. I Googled the term and the images that came up look much more like the examples that Rita provided.

Wow; what a great response, thank you everyone! Now to confront this embarrassment of riches!
The notice is an Artist's Statement that is required for a small showing of some of my images. Since it will be printed out I figured I would try to make it visually interesting as well.

Guess my response was slight overkill

You can also grab a ready-made deckle frame (Graphics/Content panel). This seems like a simple enough option, but apparently I am in deep waters here! When I try to use it PSE14 crashes, so apparently I don't know how to use these elements correctly (I really have never tried using a graphic). I created a new file, 8.5x11 inches at 72 ppi, transparent. I Located the deckle frame and clicked it; it shows up as a new layer. There is text in the graphic: click here to add photo. When I click, a dialog pops up titled Choose Photo. When I select an image and click the Place button, Kablooee! Photoshop Elements 14 Editor has stopped working. Any idea why this is happening or what I am doing wrong? EDIT:
I just noticed that the layer with the frame has Pass Through in the box where the blend modes are selected; no idea what that means. I *really* do not understand how frames are used!

Interesting Sepiana , and thanks! When I have the image already in the photo bin and drag it into the frame it works just fine. It is only when I click inside the frame and use the offered dialog to select an image that it crashes. So now that has been solved, onward! I have a bunch of text to import into the frame, but don't seem to know how to do that as well! I tried copying the text, and then using the text tool I paste it, but the formatting is all messed up. Is there a proper way to do this?

It is only when I click inside the frame and use the offered dialog to select an image that it crashes. This should not be happening either. The difference in techniques should not cause Elements to crash. Something else is going on here. I tried two different ways. No crashes whatsoever.
Opened a file and clicked on the frame thumbnail to apply it.
Followed the dialog -- Click to add photo or drag photo. I clicked inside the frame, navigated to the file on my computer, and added it to the frame.
If this is a glitch, you may want to try this fix.
1. Launch Elements as administrator by right-clicking on the desktop shortcut and selecting "Run as administrator". 2. Check what happens when you click inside the frame and follow the dialog. 3. If Elements does not crash, close it. 4. Open Elements but this time do it as a regular user.

When I do what you suggested, everything looks the same, and as soon as I click the place button it crashes. Thanks for trying to help.

What I mean in Step 2 is . . . proceed with applying the frame in the way that causes the crash -- clicking inside the frame and following the dialog. That's how you check if the "fix" (running Elements as administrator) solved the problem. If Elements doesn't crash, then, do Steps 3 and 4.
I don't really know what is causing the crash. Did you try what I suggested earlier -- a smaller file and a different frame, just to check another variable? If the crash still happens, you could try deleting the Preferences file. According to the Help file . . .

OK, I finally figured out how to reset the preferences, and that seemed to do the trick; thanks Sepiana !

Is there a proper way to do this? I didn't notice you had edited your earlier post to add this question. Here is the answer. The text copy/paste technique has some limitations. Another program’s font won’t copy into Elements; it will paste itself as the last font you used in Elements. I did some testing. I wrote some text in Word using Tahoma (10 pt). When I copied/pasted the text into the text box in Elements, it pasted as Impact (30 pt), the font I had last used.
Try these instructions.
Copying Text into Photoshop Elements with the Type Tool

I'm glad you asked this question Tom because it has set me off experimenting with this and I'm having great fun.
I have put a page up in the Digital Scrapbooking section in a thread called 'Experimenting with a Frame' describing what I have done (just in case anyone is interested in giving this a try).
