Hi All, The other day I was working on something on my computer when it locked up. I couldn't do anything with it, so I turned it off by the on-off button. When I went to turn it back on I get this error message.
It says in case you can't read it ("The program can't start because credui.dll is missing from your computer. Try reinstalling the program to fix this problem") When my computer first turns on I get a black screen with this message. After I click on OK a couple of times my logon screen comes up, and I can log on to my account. Then when I go to shut the computer off, I have to hit the OK button again to get the computer to shut off. Does anyone have a clue to what might be wrong? Any help would be appreciated. Thank You!

Hi, It good to "see" you on the new forum! What version of windows are you running? I am unfamiliar with that file, but I did a search for it and this was the first hit that came up: credui.dllIt's a place to start; I wish I could be of more help.

Thanks for the info Tom. I have Windows 7 64 bit. I have tried a couple of the suggestions on that website. But what is ever wrong won't let me run a scan. Every time I try to run some kind of a registry scan my screen just turns dark, and everything locks up again. Then I hit Ctrl,Alt,Del to open Task Manager and hit Cancel then everything goes back to normal. I am thinking I have a virus or some malware somewhere. I have Kaspersky Total Security installed, but when I scan my computer, it isn't finding anything. I'll work at it some more later. Right now I have to go mow my yard before it gets to hot. 86 degrees today here. Thanks again for your help.

Additionally try the free Spybot program to scan for malware. Good luck and let us know how you get on.

I would be very careful about running the registry scan suggested on that website. When I tried that link Norton Internet Security immediately blocked the download of the .exe file and declared it a threat.
DLL files can get easily corrupted. As a rule of thumb, just downloading a replacement file and installing it in the appropriate location on your computer will take care of the problem. However, as this specific DLL file seems to involve the registry, I would strongly recommend you get help from the source -- Microsoft. You could post in the Microsoft Community forums -- answers.microsoft.com/en-us
BTW, have you tried restoring your computer?

I agree with Sepiana, that registry scan they are linking is suspect.
I would also advise against downloading the missing dll file, as there are lots of lemons out there.
I remember having a similar issues some years ago and I did a restore to a former poin in time where I knew the system was still working.

And I agree with Simone. Be careful about downloading DLL files. If you need to do it, bypass the "middle man" and go straight to Microsoft for help.

BTW, the Avast free virus program has a "boot-time" scan. This is very valuable, as the virus scan starts before the rest of the system is initiated; that is, before a virus (if present) gets started and perhaps masks its presence.

I agree with Sepiana's advice. I also advise against running multiple anti-virus programs, as they can conflict with each other. I'd suggest you run the Microsoft System File Checker program to verify the integrity of your system files. That should enable you to replace a bad dll with a good one. support.microsoft.com/en-us/kb/929833

Why don't you try a system restore from before your problems? ??

Thank you all for your suggestions. On my System Restore, it doesn't show me a restore point before I encountered this problem. Is there a way I can go back farther in time to check to see if I have older restore points? Plus I can't install or run any kind of cleaners without the screen turning dark & locking up. I just tried updating my Java and the same thing. I get a message saying Canceled by Administrator. Oh well if I have to, I'll just reinstall Windows again. I just had to do it back in January when my computer crashed back then. Maybe it's time for a new computer. This one is 6 years old.

Thanks Sepiana, I looked at that site, but that's not what I was wanting to do. I was wanting to see if I could find older restore points from before this started to happen a couple of weeks ago. But even when I try to restore from storage disc, my computer locks up again. So I think it might be time to just do a reinstall. I might be gone for a couple of days while I do this again. Thanks again for all the help everyone.

When you do sys restore it should bring up a couple of dates and a option to pick an earlier date . I usually check that box and it will allow you to go way back to pick a date you feel comfortable with. Most times I usually do a sys restore in safe mode so other programs do not interfere. Hope that helps ... Dave

Dave -
Verber10 is saying he doesn't have a restore point previous to the problem.
