Hello I have updated to PSE14 and have been experimenting with different editing techniques. Earlier today I was looking at some photographs Sujata Setia took of her daughter and I'd really like to experiment with that type of look although, I'd probably tone the effects down a little. I am hoping someone here might have some tips or tutorials they are happy to share which would get me started. Although I was on the previous site (Elements Village) this is my first post on this site so, apologies in advance if I have put this in the wrong place! Many thanks.

Hi Sepiana. Thank you for your response and the links which is more or less what I want to try out. www.imgrum.net/user/butnaturalphotography/1453766599Hopefully the link will work as I can't see how else to do it. It is the ones of her daughter with the dog and on the second page there is one of two boys and one is holding up the remains of a dandelion. If the link doesn't work, you could find them by searching Google for Sujata Setia Photography and looking in images. I see this look a lot in photographs and I really think that in some images the almost surreal look works well.

Tricia,
Thanks for the link!
I believe those effects can be replicated in Elements with a combination of techniques -- photo tints, gradients, lighting rays, a bit of Gaussian blur, etc.
I would suggest you check some of the actions on this website. Some of them come pretty close to create the same kind of effects.

Those are powerful photos. I wish I had photos of my children growing up, but did not even own a camera. What a shame. Jean

Hi twoausses. I do regret not taking up photography earlier - so many photos missed :-)
Yes, I agree, they are powerful and I was thinking that a similar look could work well with Autumn/Winter/Christmas photos.
I have hit a snag though! Can it be that PSE14 does not have the render/light effect? You were able to do a spotlight effect (similar to the light coming into the window).
I do have two previous PSE versions (PSE 8 & 11) which I could install and which do contain the render/light effect.
I am running Windows 10 and have plenty of capacity to be able to load more than one version of Elements (I assume they won't clash as I previously had two versions running on Vista on my old laptop).
I am hoping someone might even have a 'fix' for it.

Don't worry, Sepiana will know the answer. I am fortunate in that I have PSE 11 on another computer, and can jump between each. I still have PSE 5 with PSE 14 on the same computer.

I am going to check my old laptop tonight to see which version I have on there. I think it is PSE11. I really liked PSE8 and PSE11 and, although I have no problem with PSE14, I actually prefer the earlier versions! That may change of course when I have used PSE14 more.
Hopefully Sepiana might have a solution.

I like that effect.
Do you know if it is compatible with Windows 10?
Thank you PeteB

Yes it will work with Windows and PSE. The collection is comprised of seven(7) different plug-ins. The plug-in that contains the Light Leak effect is Analog Efex Pro. www.google.com/nikcollection/

Each version of Elements is an independent one. This means you can have multiple versions installed on the same computer. This should not be a problem.
The Lighting Effects filter (Filter>Render> . . .) was removed from Elements 12. This filter can be put back into this version. Unfortunately, this cannot be done in Elements 13 and above. The solution is to keep an earlier version of Elements installed.
What features from previous versions are not available in Adobe Photoshop Elements 12?

I have PSE14 on my Windows 10 laptop and then downloaded the free NIK Collection which PeteB kindly mentioned and, everything works great.
I then re-installed my version of Capture NX2 and subsequently re-installed my copy of PSE10.
The NIK Collection is only showing in PSE14 as that is where it placed itself when I downloaded it and it would be great if I could also now link it to PSE10 and even Capture NX2 if possible.
So, my question is, is it possible and how do I do that?
As I jumped from Vista to Windows 10, Windows 10 is still a learning curve for me.
Thank you and have a happy Monday :-)
