UPDATE:
In PSE 2022 a file dragged from the Photo Bin onto another file in the workspace will come in as a Smart Object.
The OP has been edited to include this information. See NOTE.

UPDATE:In PSE 2022 a file dragged from the Photo Bin onto another file in the workspace will come in as a Smart Object. I thought that feature was already in PSE 2020 which is what I am using at the moment. In the screenshot below I dragged IMG_0870.psd onto Matrix_large.psd and when I hover over the little icon in the new IMG_0870.psd layer a tip label pops up saying "Smart object thumbnail". Isn't the IMG_0870.psd layer a smart object?

The updated information posted refers to the NOTE in the OP.In PSE 2022 a file dragged from the Photo Bin onto another file in the workspace will come in as a Smart Object. The OP has been edited to include this information. See NOTE. NOTE Adobe has been back and forth when it comes to dragging files from the Photo/Project Bin onto another file in the workspace. In some versions of Elements these files come in as Smart Objects but not in other versions. For example:
Elements 13 through 2022 -- A file dragged from the Photo Bin will come in as a Smart Object. Elements 8 through 12-- Not a Smart Object. Elements 7 -- The file came in as a Smart Object.

Ok, thank you for explaining. I went directly to the last post when I opened this thread and didn't read the op.

Sepiana, Once you have simplified a Smart Object can you make it "smart" again, or is that it, changed forever? Thanks! If I have Smart Object image in my edit I always do copy layer so I've always got Smart Object Image to fall back on, if this idea helps.
