I've been thinking about more simplification. I would consider softening the shadows on the butterflies but otherwise another nice page.

I had looked at it with different sizes drop shadow and also with a bevel only and couldn't decide which I liked better. You are probably right, it's always good to know how something appears to others.

Hi Sydney, should the Japanese characters be vertical? Pardon my ignorance if this is not the case. I think the colours all go well together, but I would like to see the characters a bit larger and maybe repeated in the background, with a very low opacity, which probably defeats the purpose of 'negative space'....LOL. BillieJean and Janice spot on with their advice. I think you are right Jackie about the vertical alignment of characters. Thanks for pointing that out.

I give up. First, I spent a day blending papers - today I tried to do something with my photo to make it interesting. I'm thinking this white space thing isn't my thing. Not looking for help - I'm not liking any aspect of this - lost interest in fixing it.

I’m really sorry but if that’s how you feel then I certainly won’t try and talk you into carrying on. This is meant to be fun and it’s not my mission to sicken anyone. Can I just say thanks for trying and also as a Scot a big thanks for serenading me with the photo of the pipes and drums. You can’t beat the sound of a good pipe band – oops is my bias showing…lol.

No it isn't. I love them too - and I am just south of the border.

I would give it a break for a day or 2 and then retry it with a fresh mindset.

Wow, sorry I came off so negative. Yep, having a bad day with that one. I don't revisit the bad ones, so it's off the table. It's just that I so liked what Billie Jean did that I wanted one like it. Plus I kinda liked the idea of Scottish Serenade for that photo. Sometimes things just won't gel for me. I know when to give up.

I know the feeling well when things won’t go the way I want or if I can’t figure out how to do something Janice. I’ve had to give up before myself as it gets too frustrating to carry on. Hopefully this will be a better day for you my friend.

Janice, just want to say that I can so relate to your frustration with your page. My problem is I need to follow your way of working and know when to give up....rather than keep getting myself frustrated trying to make something work that's never going to be right. I think you were very smart to know when to say enough. I liked this look from your first post, BillieJean and finally got around to giving it a try. At the end I took it into NIK and used a High Key filter which pulled it all together for me. Although it looks a little drab here!

Helen, that is nicely done and very much in keeping with this theme. It gives me some ideas!

Great job Helen. I'm so happy that you gave it a try, thank you. Oh to be as supple as this young lady...

Helen - that is very nice. Maybe the key to this technique is using a mask to blend the photo with the background, That works so well.

I hesitated before doing this as I don’t know if it’s wanted or not – also I am not used to doing this so hope you will make allowances for me… Just a few tips as to how I put this next page together. First I chose a background and you could get one from the Graphics tab within PSE. This one is called ‘Spring Flowers’. Then I chose the photo I wanted – in this case from Pexel and I clipped it to Crop Shape 33. I placed another Crop Shape 35 under the first Crop Shape and gave it a Hue/Sat Adjustment colour and a shadow. Then from the Frames section of Custom Shapes I chose Frame 31 and put it on top and gave it a Bevel and a mild shadow. You can build on this by adding say a watercolour brush as I have done here or an embellishment etc; I coloured it and turned the opacity way down. There are plenty of free brushes on the Internet. Just let your imagine run free…and surprise yourself. Also if you look at my first two pages in this thread you will see it’s not necessary to put a mask on your pics but using a mask just gives another way of doing this. It’s all about choices… I hope this helps.
