For this weeks Creative Effects Challenge we are going to create a Pencil Drawing effect and bring some of the original image thru to end up with something like this: So lets get started. 1. Open your image. 2. Duplicate the layer (Command/Ctrl+j) and rename it B&W 3. Desaturate the B&W Layer (Command/Ctrl+Shift+u). 4. Duplicate the B&W layer (Command/Ctrl+j) and rename it Inverted. 5. Invert the layer named Inverted (Command/Ctrl+i). 6. Change the Blendmode to Color Dodge. a. The image on your screen should turn white. b. Your layer stack should look like image 1. 7. Go to Filter>Other>Minimum 8. Set the Radius to 1 or 2, then click OK. 9. You should now have what resembles a pencil drawing on your screen 10. With the top layer selected, Create a composite layer (Command/Ctrl+Option/ait+shift+e). 11. Rename this layer Drawing. 12. Turn off the “EYES” on the B&W layer and the Inverted layer by clicking on them. 13. Add a Layer Mask to the Layer named Drawing. 14. Press D on your keyboard to set the colors to Black and White. 15. Select the Gradient tool. 16. Left Click, Hold on one side image and Drag to the other. a. The longer you drag the gradient the Smoother the transition. b. The Shorter you drag the gradient the Harsher the transition. c. Try using different gradient options for different results – See Note 1 17. Add a new layer on the top of the Layer stack. 18. Make sure white is selected as your Color. (use the X key to toggle your colors) 19. Paint in a white boarder to soften the effect. Image 1
Final Layer stackNote 1Have fun and please post your results.

Here are a couple of takes on this theme. I love the way a photo can be turned into a sketch. Thanks for the tutorial.

I have a question? On step no 10, do I hit alt+shift+e if I have Windows??? I did this and no new layer came up. The picture just got darker, I just have the three layers with inverted layer at the top. So I can not name it. It must stay inverted as per next step I see in the next step I should have another layer above the inverted layer. Hope I made some sense here!!!! Kathy Lee

kathylee, the shortcut is Ctrl-Alt-Shift-e. Did you leave out Ctrl?

Frank, great tutorial! A sketch effect is a favorite of the crowds.
Instead of using a brush to create the border effect, I added a grayscale mask from Media Militia and tweaked it a bit.

Rita, Thank you for the reply!! I could have left out the Ctrl, not sure, although I did write it down in here. I will try again, I hope that is the fix!! Kathy

I believe Rita hit the nail on the head. In Step 10, you are supposed to create a composite layer, a combination of all your visible layers. If you are on Windows, the shortcut to create such a layer is . . . Ctrl-Alt-Shift-E.
www.peachpit.com/blogs/blog.aspx?uk=5-Layers-Tips-in-5-Days-Day-3--Flattening-Layers-without-actually-flattenin
Leaving the Ctrl key out of the combo will generate a different shortcut, one to call up the Difference blending mode. I believe this explains why no layer was created at the top of the stack and "the picture just got darker".
On step no 10, do I hit alt+shift+e if I have Windows??? I did this and no new layer came up. The picture just got darker, I just have the three layers with inverted layer at the top.

This time I followed the tutorial as written and used a Reflected gradient. No tweaking!
