My theme for last week is "identify". Can anybody put a name to these structures, which seem to be appearing everywhere. This shot was taken in Iceland last week, but we have seen them in Norway, England and the USA, mostly on beaches, but anywhere where pebbles are available. We label them miniature cairns, but wondered if anyone knows of an official name for them.

Dennis, very interesting theme and a great image to interpret it! I love how you brought up the texture on these rock piles. It the kind of image which keeps one going back to it.
I myself call these rock piles "cairns"; some people refer to them as "ducks". I came across many of these rock piles while backpacking in the Southwest (Canyonlands, Arches, etc.). They were about 1 foot tall and were placed along trails to guide hikers. And . . . . I built some myself or rebuilt those which had collapsed. Thanks for the memories!

I think that sometimes it's just something that people do to say "I was here!". Other times they have the function of marking a trail or point of interest where other forms of identification don't exist or aren't possible. I followed such a trail in Arches National Park out to Delicate Arch. As I recall it was about 3 miles and in many places you had to look carefully to find the next cairn. The track crosses large expanses of bare rock with no other way to tell that there is a trail there.

There were many places where it was rather difficult to figure out which way the trail was going. Those cairns were a life saver!!!

This little church caught my attention. So, my theme is . . . Churches.

My theme is jogging which the fellow on the left hand side can be seen doing - actually it was just a pathetic excuse to post this pic of the Opera House which I took this morning . Did some minor adjustments in LR.
