This is the second Norton Alert about the same attacker inside a few days while I was on the forum. I don't understand this sort of thing well enough to know whether it has anything to do with the forum, but it has not happened on any other site.
Perhaps our IT wizards can decide whether ProBoards should be alerted to it?

Thanks for moving it, Sepiana, I wasn't sure where to put it.

Hi ritage. I am not an IT expert by any means but I can do some basic things. I did an IP lookup of the IP address in your alert at whatismyipaddress.comand it shows that the attacker's ISP is Digital Ocean, which according to Wikipedia is If the attacks persist, perhaps try to contact Digital Ocean and they might be able to track down the culprit using their servers.

Rita, no problem. I moved your thread here because, as you explained in your OP, this issue seems to be related to our forum.
it has not happened on any other site.
Thanks for bringing this to our attention! We, Mods/Administrators will look into it.

bailey, thank you. That's interesting
The main reason for my post was to see if others had the same experience. Since it seems no one does, it probably has nothing to do with the forum.
Personally I feel perfectly safe, that's what I keep Norton around for. They have never let me down.

Rita,
I'd do a full scan of your system to make sure you don't have any malware on your computer (Norton should do this for you). You could also try the free version of Malwarebytes. It is also possible that Norton is picking up as a threat the adverts that run on the ProBoards banner.

Andy, thanks for your input. Picking up the banner ads, that makes a lot of sense to me. Norton has become very sensitive, fortunately in view of what is going on these days.
I ran full scans with Norton and Malwarebytes immediately after both alerts. I always do.

You can work out if the source of the attacks are the ads or not by using an ad-blocker. Personally, I use the free Ublock Origin. I find it very effective in blocking out ads, resulting in faster page loads and reducing bandwidth usage. The only minor downside I have encountered is that ublock sometimes blocks legitimate functionality (like some pop-ups) on some legitimate web sites. This is easily overcome by disabling ublock for that web site. Ublock installs as a browser extension with a small icon appearing on your browsers toolbar from which you configure and control ublock. If you install an ad-blocker and the attacks cease, then the ads are the most probable source of the attacks.

I use Adblock Plus - ABP.
It is another good free program.

bailey and Whippet, are you saying that with your ad blockers you do not see the banner ads at top and square ads at the bottom of this forum?
I am using the built-in ad blocker of my browser, but had to exclude this site because it also prevented me from using some of the features available to members only.

I see no ads at all on this web site. What I do see at the top of each page is: " Please consider supporting this website by disabling your ad-blocker. This website does not use audio ads, popups, or other annoyances. Thank you!" so the web site is monitoring the use of ad-blockers. As requested in the message, I have considered disabling my ad-blocker, but have at the end decided not to. If I need a particular product or service I am more than capable of researching it myself.

whippet, do you know whether you can use the forum tools when you do turn it on? That is the problem I am trying to solve.
