I understand how you created the pattern but how did you create the final version (those circles)? Did you by any chance use your Image Stacking action to create the circles?

The circles started out as 3D spheres, resized and stacked. The layers where put into a group folder, duplicated and moved twice. The background layer was blurred to add depth.
