We were very fortunate to have clear skies last night to view and photograph the lunar eclipse. I took a series of photos from soon after moon rise to the maximum eclipse (moon is closest to the centre of the shadow) at 12:29am 1 Feb 2018. This is a composite of the various stages of the eclipse.

I am just reading up on why the moon turns red and also checking when is the next total lunar eclipse visible from Melbourne. The next total eclipse is on 28 July 2018 and the one after is then not until May 2021. According to timeanddate the eclipse will be close to the horizon and in the WSW direction which will be difficult to photograph from home, where I took last night's photos from. So I am very fortunate to have been able to photograph last night's eclipse. The weather and location of the moon in the sky were ideal. But now that I have my own eclipse photos I won't be hanging out to photograph another eclipse. To a large extent, if you've seen one, you've seen them all . It's too easy to photoshop moons into any other photo.

I agree with Pete.
Also with your remark, bailey - once you have seen one . . .
Having said that, when Hale - Bopp was around, I was out there every night, watching it. Spectacular. And to me, very emotional.

Thank you everyone I made the sequence by simply putting each individual photo on a separate layer in a new image with a black background. I want to make a large print of the sequence so I will either take a photo of the night sky on a clear night or find a suitable background image from somewhere.

Pete, thanks! I was not aware of that. Keep us posted! Hi Sepiana, It's actually the same web site the link I posted earlier points to. On that site you can search for all types of eclipses for any part of the world.

I am playing around with making my own background night sky with PSE for the eclipse sequence. This is one option. I will play with a few other ideas and choose the one I like best to make a print.

Yes....like it with star background.

Bailey The star background adds depth = nice addition. To my eyes the slight rays on the right are slightly distracting.

Thank you for your feedback hmca and Peter. This morning I played around trying to create a nebula cloud. I'm still not 100% happy with the edge around the nebula but I am getting close. Not being an "arty" person or designer I could spend days playing with this whereas an experienced designer could come up with a background much quicker. I will tinker with this a bit more as time permits in the next few days and I'm sure I will come up with something I will be happy to print.

Playing around a little more, this nebula is pretty close to what I am after.
