Most of the posts I have to reply to in the Adobe forum or in this one are when people did not ask before and fell into traps... It's really a pleasure to help prevent catastrophes... Many, many thanks to those who do like you did! Searching in older posts or in various help files is useful, but it's easier and faster to get a direct answer by asking the question first. Helping with the organizer (or simply backup topics) is just like selling insurance... The danger is everywhere and you have to use the right tools correctly.

.. With hindsight I think I will make two folders and then do the backups again and save them into their respective folders. .. Yes, that is exactly what I suggested One last tip fwiw. When you do subsequent backups, rename your current backup folder to something else, create a new folder and name it the catalogue's name and output the new backup to the new folder. Do not overwrite or delete the old backup until the new backup is complete. So if you are really, really unlucky and your hdd with all your photos fails during the backup, you will still have the old backup on your external hdd and you would have lost only the new and modified files since your last backup. eg.. 1. say your current backup is on external hdd in folder MyPhotosWarehoue_backup/catalogue_xyz. 2. rename MyPhotosWarehoue_backup/catalogue_xyz to MyPhotosWarehoue_backup/catalogue_xyz_OLD 3. create folder MyPhotosWarehoue_backup/catalogue_xyz 4. output new backup to MyPhotosWarehoue_backup/catalogue_xyz 5. when backup is complete, delete folder MyPhotosWarehoue_backup/catalogue_xyz_OLD Good luck

Thanks Michel, it is so lovely to have contact with someone who knows what he's talking about. ChrisAnn, isn't that the truth? I totally agree. Michel does KNOW his stuff. No wonder he is an ACP (Adobe Community Professional & MVP).
Most of the posts I have to reply to in the Adobe forum or in this one are when people did not ask before and fell into traps... Michel, I was one of those people (back on the now-closed EV forum). I made such a mess of my catalog that I finally gave up on the Organizer. You came to the rescue and now . . . the Organizer and I see eye to eye again.

I concur Thank you for your thoughts and help michelb. Not being a fully professional photographer, your suggestions reinforcing my ideas on backups (based on my experience in database administration of Oracle databases and data integrity) shows me I am on the right track. Thank you
