Taken last week from a hotel balcony. Further to the discussion above, I had taken this as a bracketed 3-image, not because of the dynamic range, but because I quite like the results of Aurora's tone mapping (as Tonyw describes) and wanted to keep my options open. When it came to it, the additional noise introduced by the HDR process in the sky (the Canon EOS 7D Mk 1 is famously 'noisy') overwhelmed the final image, so I just used one image and processed as normal in Lightroom. Alex, an amazing image! Great composition, beautiful colors, with the bonus of some very interesting cloud formations.
I don't remember you having participated in the WP challenge before. So, welcome to the WP challenge! Looking forward to seeing more of your participation here.

... The only slight issue in your image that clearly stands out on my screen, which may or may not on yours and others, is slight banding (uneven colour gradient) in the sky's colour at about 40% from the left border and 20% from the top border. On a screen at low resolution it's not very noticeable but on a print, especially a large size, I suspect it would be. Anyway, please don't take this as criticism but as food for thought Bailey, Absolutely fine, thanks, I value all critique. I can indeed see the banding you are talking about. It is not as obvious in my full resolution image, but the upload to Flickr (where I reduce size to 1024 on the long side) and the export out of Flickr (reduced again to 800) has exacerbated it a bit. I will tinker with my image to tidy it up.

no problem alexr, happy to help fwiw, in case you are not aware, the histogram can help to indicate whether there is banding in images. Hopefully it will be a quick and easy tweak in your original image to remove the banding.

dennis9 (and Brenda). Thanks for suggesting this theme! It took a while but my camera finally "saw" these clouds. Good thing there is no longer a posting deadline.

These clouds over the Santa Catalina Mountains captured my attention this morning.
