Goodby February and hello March! Thank you to Helen for a great challenge last month; I enjoyed seeing the different conversions of your images. This month I would like you all to go out and photograph landscapes or, if weather conditions don't permit (I am looking at you UK!) shoot from the comfort of your windows! Additionally, I came across this very help little article on black & white landscape photography. My photos all contain snow, so they do have the same sort of feel about them, but given it's winter here in Alberta I really had no other choice. I use LR CC to convert my photos into black & white and usually start with either my own presets or some free ones downloaded from reputable sites. I followed that process when I converted these photos; a lot of the time I end up changing the settings a fair amount as inspiration usually strikes during the conversion. Hopefully this theme will appeal to a wider audience and I look forward to your submissions.

Thank you Frank for getting us off the mark!
These are great, I particularly like the fact that the water really does take center stage here with the rest of the forest fallng into the background. Can you share how you converted these?

I always start with a color version of the image, use a Black and White Gradient Map and add a vignette. Overly simple but it works.

I took this photo in colour. What I normally do to convert to black and white is: 1: Use one of the presets under Enhance -> Convert To Black and White to get as close as possible to what I am after. 2: Then use a series of Levels Adjustment Layers (and sometimes Brightness and Contrast) to adjust various elements in the image, using masks, to maximise the tonal range and bring out as much detail in the image as possible or required. Ideally, you want good solid blacks and whites. The overall histogram and the histogram for the various elements is the best way I know to maximise the image's tonal range. A full tonal range helps give depth and punch to the image. If the BW image doesn't have good blacks and whites, resulting in a low contrast image, the image will most probably look flat and lifeless and lack detail imho. In this image I adjusted the overall Levels and then adjusted the sky, clouds and cliff face in separate Levels Adjustment Layers.

Was out walking the dog along a local trail after a fresh fall of snow with just a phone and this scene caught my eye - shot in colour with the phone and converted to B&W in Lightroom. Tony

A couple from the Archeological Site in Pafos, Cyprus last week. I don't often consider mono for landscapes but it struck me that the very white lighthouse would work quite well. Both images processed initially in colour then converted to mono in Silver Efex. I would love to say that I had a plan and processed them specifically to enhance particular aspects, but in reality I did what I always do, I selected one of the presets and played around with settings - mainly the 'film types' until I got something that I quite liked. I have no idea what those settings were I'm afraid. farm5.staticflickr.com/4609/40640964891_12af1ce507_c.jpgfarm5.staticflickr.com/4783/40640963281_a283141062_c.jpg

Alex, I really like how the lighthouse truly stands out in these photos! Thanks for taking me back to the med!

Tony,
That is quite a photo! The snow almost looks foam-like in this.

Great additions to this challenge Pete, Judy, and Jackie, from snowy landscapes, cloudscapes, and seascapes!
