Let's try something new I am using PSE 11Single Photo Multi-Squares Template
Using the marquee tool or the shape tool, draw a rectangle. Duplicate this rectangle once. Draw a square. Duplicate this square twice. Arrange. The shapes need to be close together because we are going to clip one photo to the photo squares. Framing your shapes - there are many ways to do this, but my favorite is just to make a bigger square. Select your photo square by control clicking on the thumbnail of the square in the layers panel. This will give you your marching ants. Select> Modify> Expand — to make your selection larger. Open a new layer. While on you new layer, fill your selection. I’m still using the paint bucket to do this, but there are keystrokes I can never remember, that will fill your layer. Repeat this for each photo layer. Your frame layers need to be under your photo layers. You will now have five photo squares and five frames.

In order to get one photo to appear across all the photo squares, the photo squares will need to be merged. The frame layers can be merged or they can stay as single layers. If you merge them, you can easily change the color of the frames with one click. If you keep them unmerged, this gives you the option of having different frame colors. Your choice. Open a photo with interest across the top and the bottom right. A plain photo will not work well, but only you can decide which look you are going for. Place your photo above your merged photo squares layer in your layer panel - adjust the size of the photo so it approximates the size of your merged photo layers. Stay on the photo layer and hit Control G. This will clip your photo to your photo placeholder layer. In later versions of PSE, this shortcut may have been changed.

Yes, these were both done using one photo clipped to all five squares. Try it, you'll like it.

OK...so I tried this Janice. Thinking I was knowing what I was doing but finding out I wasn't. So here's what I finally came up with. I think your landscape picture works well for this technique......I think a busier photo would have worked better for me....along with paying better attention to the directions ;-).

Helen - I like your take on this. Your muted background - to fill in the spaces - works so well to give this tutorial it's own unique spin.

For those that have Ver 15 or newer(or the full version of Photoshop) you can place your shapes in a group and apply your Layer styles to the group. You can use the stoke as a border on the group. If you want to change the color of the border/stroke you only need to do it one time. The shapes can also be changed independently. Layer Stack
