This challenge is to ‘Create Art from a photo using a texture’.
Please look at the video Here and enjoy being creative using textures with your photos.
NOTE: I hope I don’t offend anyone but can I ask please that for ‘this’ challenge, in keeping with the video tutorial, you use only the tools native to PSE/PS. In other words please don’t use any plugins or other programmes such as Topaz or Filter Forge etc; That way we are all on a level playing field and you might amaze yourself as to what you can do using PSE/PS alone.
For those who prefer printed instructions I would advise a quick look at the video before reading the instructions provided below as I think you could find that helpful.
Let’s get started. – Items needed – a photo and a texture.
1. First open the photo and texture you want to use.
Sepiana has provided a list of places Here from where textures can be obtained.
2. In the layers tab place your texture on the layer above your photo.
3. Now blend the texture layer with your photo layer by cycling through the Blend modes till you find something that you like.
If you are after a darker grittier look as in the video where the multiply blend mode was used you may then want to re-introduce some light to a particular area of your image. So…

4. Create a new blank layer and using the elliptical marquee tool drag out an oval.
5. Add a feather to the oval – Select> Feather> 100 pixel radius to soften the edge and fill the selection with white by using Ctrl/Cmd/Backspace. Then Ctrl/Cmd + D to deselect the selection.
You now have a big white blotch on your page.

6. Choose a Blend mode to blend it into your page to get the lighter look that you want. Overlay can be a good blend mode for this and if it’s too bright reduce the opacity to a level more pleasing. Using the move tool move that layer around to place it over the part of the image you want lightened.
7. Create a vignette effect around the image. There are several ways to do this but we will follow the video and do it as follows.
8. Create a new layer and using the rectangle marque tool drag out a rectangle about an inch in from the edge of your image.
Go to Select and click Invert to invert the selection and then using the colour picker choose one of the darker colours in your image and then alt/backspace on a PC Opt/Delete on a mac to fill the selection with the colour. Then Ctrl/Cmd + D to deselect the selection. Run through the blend modes to find something you like and now we need to blur this layer.

9. Filter> Blur> Gaussian Blur. Use the slider to get a nice vignette effect and click ok and you are done.
This procedure is a great way of changing the mood of a photo.
The Extra Mile (not in the video)
If you want to go the extra mile you could create a stamped/composite layer by activating the top layer and holding down the key combo of shift+Ctrl+Alt+E. Go to Filter > Texture> Texturizer and put a texture on your image.
For my example I have tried to create a kind of setting sun effect. I also went the ‘extra mile’ and via Filter>Texture>Texturizer used a canvas texture effect for the end result. Click on the image for a larger view.
