Thanks to all, Bailey, Andrei and also to Sepiana for branching to a new discussion. In my request, storing the images as embedded smart layers was important for me. The scripts by Bailey and Elements+ are good contributons though.
Michel, you are most welcome! Now the feature you requested for PSE won't get buried in another thread and will get the attention it deserves. I believe this feature will be very helpful for users of this program. (Are you listening, Adobe?)
To those who may be following this thread, . . . please, cast your vote!
See my feature request in the feedback forum:
Imagine you can drag 50 opened files on your canvas in a single move, that would compensate the lack of an 'Open as layers' command. If someone is interested, it would be good to add your vote.

I have cast my vote, but being impatient I don't want to wait until the next version release next year or whenever Adobe decide it is worthwhile implementing beyond that. The script I posted earlier (which anyone can copy/paste and do what they like with) works perfectly for me, so I have the feature now . (the feedback received so far is encouraging)

hmmmmm........doesn't appear to be much interest so far. At the time of this post, still only 1 vote on michelb's feature request page.

I need to study this thread in detail - looks interesting. Sydney,
This thread has got convoluted and it is hard to follow. In a nutshell, . . . it is about a feature Michel requested Adobe to include in Elements. I believe it would be immensely helpful for users of this program, particularly those who are into compositing, creating collages, scrapbooking, etc. This is the purpose of his post.

The feature request, if implemented by Adobe, will open files as smart layer objects on a single document. If you prefer to not wait until the feature is included in PSE (if ever), I have updated in another thread the script I posted earlier to open files as smart layer objects on a single document to now present a user friendly dialog box for user inputs. If anyone is interested, feel free to copy/paste it and do whatever you like with it. Hopefully michelb's feature request will be implemented into PSE in the next version.

Hi Sepiana, Reading through this thread it appears very clear to me. I offered to modify one of my scripts to basically do the feature michelb is requesting and both he and Sydney appear to appreciate the OP, my offer and posts. If you feel any of my posts in this thread are not helpful to michelb, Sydney or anyone else, then please delete them. I won't mind Otherwise I will assume they are appropriate and related to the topic of michelb's op. ** Hopefully someone will either create or post a link to an action that does essentially the same thing as my script so that those who cannot run scripts in PSE can also have access to the requested feature rather than wait for Adobe to implement it.
