I have a photo that I would like to correct so that the lighting is reasonably even. Have done some research but this looks to be a complex business, perhaps. Is there a way to accomplish just getting the lighting even. Have tried levels, brightness/contrast, etc. No improvement, really. Photo below.
Thank you in advance.

It's a difficult task. Do you have a larger copy or is this a scan of a print? Opened in ACR and adjusted shadows and played around.

How very odd. I posted this a couple of hours ago and it just... disappeared!
Anyway, using Enhance | Adjust Lighting | Shadows/Highlights seems to have helped a bit.

Here is the result of my quick & dirty effort (it definitely looks like a scanned photo, what with a part of another image in the lower left)
I used two Brightness and Constrast adjustment layers. On one I increased the brightness until the left side looked about right, then painted on the mask to eliminated the effect on the right side. On the other adjustment layer I darkened the image until the right side looked about right, then painted on the mask to eliminated the effect on the left side.
Here is the layer stack:

I don't know what the heck is going on here, but I don't think FrizzyLee's original post had that artifact in the lower left. It doesn't show in Pontiac 1940's version. I think I'm losing my mind!

I can see it the OP. It looks like Clive cropped the image and got rid of it.

Hi frizzy Lee,
the way I would even out the light is open the image in ACR and adjust the exposure for each different area of lighting in the image.
You will need to open the image in ACR for each section you need to adjust. Then open the images in PSE in separate layers and use layer masks to blend the layers. You might have to adjust some layer opacities to fine tune the lighting.
This has given me good results when I had a similar situation in the past.
Moderators have complained when I have downloaded images in the past without permission so I won't download your image since I don't have your permission.

Indeed, I cropped the image. My version is a titch too warm. Could I have "disappeared" Major Major's post? Can't see that happening..should not be possible. I posted an edit and then decided to delete my post...and later added a new post. Cyber gremlins..or the Russians. Clive

Tom sent me a PM saying he'd accidentally deleted my post, so that problem solved. I guess I just didn't see that bit in the corner. Getting too old for this stuff

oh well, seeing others have downloaded and edited your image, I may as well have a go as well. This is just a quick basic edit using the method I posted earlier. This appears to be a scanned image so it really needs more editing to clean it up further. Edited Original

And even if you accidentally delete one of your own posts, it's not normally actually deleted (at least on Web sites that I have built). It's flagged as invisible in the Web site's database, but admins and maybe mods, depending on their access privileges, can still see and/or restore them. The post can be deleted in the future according to Web site's configuration settings.

And it probably also explains why one of my posts went awol and reappeared out of the original sequence of posts a while back
