Hi all, I have been using PSE9 without any problems for several years, currently with Windows 10 but also with earlier versions of Windows. It does all that I need so I see no need to upgrade to a later version. However recently a problem has arisen. When I use Control-I to open a photo in the Editor, the Editor workspace opens but the photo does not open. However if the photo is one that has been previously edited, even some days earlier, it will open in the Editor. Using the various Fix options in the Organiser has the same result, i.e. they don’t work either. I have uninstalled and re-installed PSE9 twice, once from my original disc and again using a new download from Adobe, with no effect. Any suggestions on how to fix the problem, please?
Thanks,
RobertWA

Hi robertWA, welcome to PSE&M! Glad to have you here. Sometimes PSE just decides to be finicky. Have you tried any one of the troubleshooting suggestions below?
- Run PSE as administrator. Right-click on the desktop shortcut and select this option from the menu. - Run PSE in Compatibility Mode with your OS. Right-click on the desktop shortcut and select Properties>Compatibility.
- Create a new user account/profile and launch PSE from this account. - Launch the Editor and/or the Organizer directly via a desktop shortcut.
Hopefully one of these suggestions will fix the problem. Let us know how it goes.

Hi robertwa,
On an image where ctrl-I does not work correctly, does right-clicking the image's thumbnail in the Organiser and then selecting "Edit with Photoshop Elements Editor" work correctly?

robertwa ,
I have just thought of something else. Your answers to these questions will help with the troubleshooting. Thanks in advance!
- When you re-installed PSE 9, did you also re-install the updates Adobe had issued for this version? I believe they were -- 9.0.1, 9.0.2, and 9.0.3. - When you go Organizer > Editor, do you by any chance get any kind of error message? Something like "Attempt to access invalid address"? - If you do "Open with" in Windows Explorer, will the photo open in the Editor?

No When you re-installed PSE 9, did you also re-install the updates Adobe had issued for this version? I believe they were -- 9.0.1, 9.0.2, and 9.0.3. Yes, I am using 9.0.3 When you go Organizer > Editor, do you by any chance get any kind of error message? Something like "Attempt to access invalid address"? No.
If you do "Open with" in Windows Explorer, will the photo open in the Editor? Yes

I haven’t tried any of these yet, but since my original post I have discovered that the problem seems to relate to only one catalog. I have my photos organized into several catalogs and I have tested a few of the others and everything is OK with them.
I tried to Repair the dodgy catalog – I got the message that no problems could be found but I chose the Repair Anyway option – no luck. I also Optimised the catalog – same result.
So it seems to be a problem with this particular catalog, not a general PSE problem.
It’s not an “end of the world” level problem because I can get my photos into the Editor in other ways – it’s just that it would be a lot more convenient if I could do it from the Organizer.
Cheers,
Robert

Robert, thanks for the answers to my questions! They help eliminate variables and guide the troubleshooting direction.
Great idea! Let's put these permissions/compatibility suggestions aside. The points of the compass seem to lead to the Organizer as the potential suspect.
I sent a PM to michelb bringing this thread to his attention. Not only is he our in-house Organizer guru but he is also an Adobe Community Professional and MVP. You will be in good hands. Hang in there!

No problem robertwa I like right-clicking the thumbnail in the Organiser and then clicking "Edit with Photoshop Elements Editor" over Ctrl-I anyway. I can never remember most shortcuts options.
As I posted earlier, michelb is the "go to" person for the Organiser.

Robert, I am not an Organizer expert and may just be making a fool of myself here.
If the problem is with just one of the catalogs, what about deleting the "problem" catalog and creating a new one to replace it? If I understand it correctly, you can delete a catalog if there is more than one.
What do you think? Is it worth a try?

Hi all,
Thanks for the advice/suggestions.
Sepiana, I don't think that creating a new catalog will work because the problem catalog contains all of the "structure", ie albums, tags etc which would be lost if I simply imported my photos from the old catalog into the new.
Bailey, the right-click method seems to work most of the time (but not all).
It seems that I'll just have to persevere with various work-arounds with this catalog. Fortunately I have just about finished what I want to do with this set of photos and I can move onto another set in a catalog which works.
Thanks again for all your help.
Robert

Robert, let’s backtrack the troubleshooting. You said earlier:
. . . the Editor workspace opens but the photo does not open. However if the photo is one that has been previously edited, even some days earlier, it will open in the Editor. Sometime ago we had a report of a somewhat similar situation. The OP could open some photos but not others going the Organizer>Editor route. He posted this workaround.
Something I discovered regarding the older photos that I can't get to go directly from the Organizer to the Editor using Full Edit. If I open one from the Editor, make some changes, and do a Save As, the option to Save in Version Set With Original is grayed out. Does that mean that PSE5 doesn't recognize the original photo as being part of the Catalog ?? Yet if I try Get Photos to get it into the Catalog without deleting it first, Get Photos says it can't because the photo is already in the Catalog. However, if I take that same photo and delete it from the Catalog first, and then use Get Photos to put it back into the Catalog, it will now go from the Organizer to the Editor just like normal. And if I make changes to the photo while in the Editor, Save in Version Set With Original is available. It seems as if all of my photos are technically in the Catalog, but the majority of them are not recognized by the Organizer as being part of the Catalog.

Hi Sepiana,
Thanks for persevering.
It seems that whenever a photo is edited via the Open With option, the Save in Version Set With Original is always grayed out. This seems to be a feature of PSE, but at least the photo is saved in the catalog and can be found in the Organiser.
The statement from Dano confirms my findings, ie, any photo which has previously been through the Editor will later go from the Organiser to the Editor using Control-I.
Cheers,
Robert
