Hi everyone,
I created an action (.atn file) to transform an image into a pencil sketch. Feel free to download it and give it a try. I tested this action in PSE 7, 10, 11 and above. It worked just fine. I believe the same will hold true for PSE 8 and 9.
If you have PSE 11 and above, load the .atn file via either the Actions panel or the Effects panel.
If you have PSE 7 through 10, you need to install this action so that it can be accessed via the Action Player (Guided Edit>Automated Actions>Action Player). Windows: C:\ProgramData\Adobe\Photoshop Elements\x.x\Locale\en_us (or your locale)\Workflow Panels\actions Mac: Hard Drive>Library>Application Support>Adobe>Photoshop Elements>x.x>Locale>en_us (or your locale)>Workflow Panels>actions NOTE: The results will vary depending on the nature and size of your image. I tested different sizes (in pixel dimensions). Sepianas Pencil Sketch.zip (537 B)

Thanks, Sepiana - works a treat! (On some images better than others, of course.)

Have always loved your black and white sketch action, Sepiana. Used it here: And then reducing the opacity over the original.... Look forward to trying your new one!

Works well in CS5. Love your action. Thanks, Sepiana.
With a small amount of color brought back.

Thanks Sepiana! You can ADD a Levels adjustment layer to lighten or darken the image. With the mask you can adjust specific parts of the sketch.

Thank you all for downloading and testing this action! I really like how some of you took it a step further by bringing some color back, adding a photo filter, etc.
As you found out, depending on the nature of your image, sometimes a Levels adjustment is needed to give the sketch more contrast. You can also try other techniques such as Unsharp Mask or the High pass filter. Another option is to duplicate the sketch layer, change the blending mode to Multiply, reduce the Opacity.

Thanks Sepiana. I use PSE 13 and the download and use went seamlessly for use with the action player. I ran the action on the color image show and then overlaid the results onto the original and blended using Pin Light to achieve the final rendition. The ease and the initial results will keep me "playing" for a few more hours. Again, Thank you.

I really like your twist -- applying the Pin Light blending mode. I need to try that. BTW, if you like this kind of effect, you may want to check my other action. It is a basic sketch effect. I'm wondering what filter you used when you started to make the Pencil Sketch action.
Was it "find edges", Ink outlines, graphic pen, etc.
Thanks, a curious Berie.
