EDIT: Oh shoot. Helen you beat me by one minute. But you too used the word "island" so, hearing no objections, I'll leave this.  Autumn trees on an "island" of sorts. Hardly tropical.  Cypress Hills in SE Alberta a most interesting place. This is the second highest point of land in Canada east of the Rockies. What makes it an island is that during the last glaciation, the top of the Cypress Hills, that can be seen here, were not covered in ice. They remained an island in an ocean of ice. That ice, that was over one mile deep in places across all of Canada, melted at unimaginable rates over a few thousand years. Fun stuff.
