The red and white stripes of the barber pole originated from a practice known as bloodletting. ... The bloody bandages associated with bloodletting inspired the red and white stripes, while the barber pole itself symbolises an instrument people gripped onto during the procedure to encourage blood flow. At that time, barbers also carried out dental, and medical treatment. The photograph is a modern pole - though some barbers still have the old type. (Taken today in pouring rain).

This is on our Village Green. Buried underneath, is a time capsule . . . a tradition in this country. Today. And still raining.

It's traditional that a dog will stick his nose into any hole that smells "interesting". I don't know what he thought was in there, but it sure had his interest.

I love it! Great composition -- the horizontal siding boards acting as leading lines to the "curious" dog in the corner.
