Members submitting an image for this challenge are asked to offer a brief statement as to why they chose their image. Participants in the challenge have the option of presenting an edit with the photographer’s reasons in mind or instead presenting an image that reflects their own creative vision. The member submitting this image thought it could offer the opportunity for some creative editing.1. Participants in the challenge are asked to provide a screenshot of their edits within the RAW converter of their choice along with the reasons for their edits. 2. Following their initial edits members may use whatever “tools" they wish to create an image that portrays their artistic vision for the image as long as the character of the original image is not lost. 3. Including information on plug-ins, actions, external editors, textures, sky replacements etc that were used will only help to inform members of some of the creative options that are available to today’s photographer. 4. Including layer stacks may be something to consider when presenting a final edit. You have two weeks to participate in this challenge. It ends on January 25th. At the end of the challenge the image creator will select their three favorite edits. Comments are restricted to complimenting another member's edit. You can download the dng. file here.

I will start this off with a few additions to this photo. I added photos of my own - the truck, sign, and gas pump. I removed the original lettering on the sign and added Land for Sale, used a bird brush to add the three birds in flight and the raven on the sign. Then finished with a texture over the flattened image. i.ibb.co/K7NZwMX/7IQMpCs.jpg

Opened image and didn't do anything to it in Camera RAW as I thought the photographer had created a well exposed image that would work for the edit I had in mind. I belong to a black and white forum where some photographers post their Holga images. I wanted to emulate this look for my first edit of this image. I cropped to a square and flipped the image to have the cactus on the left. Then using NIK SE 2 I chose the Triste 2 preset and tweaked a bit. After that I added a vignette and finished it off with a double picture mount added by using an action available as an extension to be used with photoshop.

Opened in ACR and lightened darks and shadows and stressed it with the clarity slider and did some selective desaturation. Was going for an old school, faded-pastel look. The edges were erased using a "nature" brush a couple of times. Something like that.
Ooops...missed this need. Red face. And did some selective desaturation/saturation in PSE after ACR. As I recall reduced yellows and upped the blue a titch although that is not apparent.

Opened in ACR and made a few changes as shown... Duplicated the resulting image twice. Changed one copy to B&W Scenic Landscape and blended together with the second duplicate using the darken blend mode. Then placed a sandstone texture from Wild Textures on top and used the colour blend mode.

I found the desert "litter" in the foreground a bit distracting so went for a tighter crop on the cactus while maintaining the same aspect ratio. That also helps emphasise the mountains and sky in the distance. Rest of the adjustments were primarily in Lightroom where I used the gradient and adjustment brush to tweak the exposure on the cactus interior as well as balancing the left and right halves. Did then take it into ON1 Effects and tweaked a little more starting from the Magic Desert preset. Interesting challenge especially trying to decide how to crop. Tony

Thanks for this raw challenge; this has many similarities to images that I've captured here in the Tucson area. My intent with this edit was to highlight the cactus detail and color keeping in mind the area in which it grows. On1 Photo Raw 2020 used exclusively to adjust tones as indicated below and added dynamic contrast with slight increase in vibrance to the cactus only.

One more with a square crop as I liked that "road" leading to the hills. Same adjustments as before in Lightroom, modified the colours in Topaz Restyle and added a Jodi layer style frame. Tony

Same ACR settings as my previous upload but this time I took the result and applied a coloured pencil filter - settings shown - Created a stamped layer and placed a Pastel Fine Art texture from MixPixBox on top with the linear burn blend mode. Used the rectangular marquee tool to create a frame and applied an Inner Shadow Style to that.
