I have PSE 12. Although a total amateur I have had good results manipulating CR2 files from my Canon 60D. I recently bought a Lumix ZS40 for a walk-around camera. The RAW files are RW2 format. I can get good results for color and lighting but if I make ANY changes the images become very grainy. Any idea why this would be? Camera? File format? PSE doesn't like RW2?

Have you gone under Help: Updates in PSE12 to get the latest version of Adobe Camera Raw?

Yes, it is essential that you have the latest ACR update. If you click Help/About Plug in/Camera Raw.. it will tell you what version you currently have. It should be version 9.something. If not, click Help/updates.

I believe the last ACR update compatible with Elements 12 is 8.5. You cannot update to the 9.0 version; this version is compatible with Elements 13 only.

It looks to me like you have the necessary ACR update to process the Raw files from the Lumix ZS40. If you didn't have it, you wouldn't be able to open these files in the Raw Converter. You would get an error message. I believe something else is at works here. Did you update your version of Elements to 12.1?
As a side note -- Adobe introduced support for your camera with the ACR 8.4 update.

I, myself, am also a total amateur, but I will put in my cents worth anyway. An idea is to select a few RAW files that you know have been giving you problems and e-mail/zip-file them to some kind caring patient soul who also has Elements 12 and let them see if they can discover the problem. Just a suggestion; hope it is helpful.

My version of PSE is 12.1 and the version of ACR is 8.5.0.236. The update process says everything is up to date.

................. I can get good results for color and lighting but if I make ANY changes the images become very grainy.
Unless I am missing something, I find that hard to believe. Are you saying that when you open the raw file in ACR it looks fine and that soon as you adjust the exposure a tiny bit (for example), the image suddenly becomes grainy??? That doesn't sound right to me.
Post some screenshots describing exactly what you are doing and it might help resolve your issue.

Post some screenshots describing exactly what you are doing and it might help resolve your issue. Fishcad's thread in the Adobe Photoshop Elements forum where he is getting help with this issue includes screenshots. Please see the link posted earlier in this thread.

we must be looking at different threads then because when I looked at the op's thread on the Adobe forum it contains only ONE screenshot and not "screenshots" as you posted and the ONE screen shot I see is not even from the OP. It's from a member who replied to the OP.
I've seen this issue before, or very very similar, but before potentially misleading the op IN THIS THREAD (I don't have time to tramp all over the Internet looking at peoples' cross-posts) I'd like to see exactly what his/her problem is. I find screenshots is the best way to describe what people are seeing.
I'll pop back next week to see if this issue has been resolved or not

Here is the thread in question -- forums.adobe.com/thread/1867848?sr=stream&ru=1438752
In post #2 fishcad attaches two screenshots and says -- "Attached are an original JPG and RAW files."
In post #3 he attaches one screenshot and says -- "By comparison here is a screenshot of the RAW image (opened in PSE) taken with a Canon 60D."

To anyone following this thread:
It looks like fishcad got his problem solved.
His THREAD in the Adobe Photoshop Elements forum is now marked -- "This question has been answered."
He posted this at the end of his thread -- "Thanks. Was able to get the color and lighting adjusted without the noise."

I'm sure you didn't mean to sound surly in your response to Sepiana, but that's how it reads. This is a friendly forum, filled with kind, helpful people. Tone is important in how we interact with each other. Sepiana is doing this through the goodness of her heart - she is not an employee although she is a Moderator. Her responses are always couched in kind tones and helpfulness. In mentioning the other thread, she was just trying to get around redundancy - and cross info - as she found OP was getting advice in another forum. She was just trying to keep the conversation on track.
