Trying to decide how best to present then and now pictures for a local project. Here's an example. The picture on the right is of a general store taken probably around 1900 and long since closed. The picture of the left is at it is today (actually really today!). I of course took it in colour but decided it might be better to try and match the original sepia tone but now I can't decide. What do you think - colour or sepia? The sepia version: The colour version: Tony

I think the color version adds to the NOW portion of the project.

I think Pete makes a good point. Sounds like a fun project.

There is a local' Memories Of . . ' facebook page. One member regularly puts Then & Now photos on. He always keeps the colour with the Now. It does seem to be more effective.

I think the sepia is better. It's a good contrast if you know what I mean. TB

I like it either way. But the color says today if you were to intentionally showing the old and new

I'll waffle on the great color vs sepia debate for the "now" photos. Right now the colors are rather muted because it is winter. The "now" color photo is suitably different than the "then" sepia. However, if this project continues to summer, will the color photos (with greenery) be too much of a contrast compared to the sepia "then" photos. I am not sure.
Very cool project! Nice.

Tony,
It may depend on the presentation. Side by side on the screen, both sepia seems more fair for the comparaison. However in the context of an exposition with a concept it may be different. More importantly: what a nice project! I find it touching to see the proud people in front of store and then, the current state. Thanks for sharing.

Thanks for all the comments. This is a work in progress and likely they will finish up as separate images displayed side-by-side with a write up about the history so appreciate the different opinions. I'm thinking some variety might be good so possibly sepia for some and colour for others.
