This Challenge, which is to create a cross-processed image, is a little different in that there is no tutorial to follow for reasons that I'll explain. Cross processing (or Xpro) is the deliberate processing of photographic film in a chemical solution intended for a different type of film. Cross Processed colour photographs are typically characterized by unnatural colors and high contrast and the results are often unpredictable so there is always the element of surprise! There are many digital ways of doing much the same thing by modifying the colours, saturation and contrast but when looking for a common way to do it I really couldn't find one. In my version of Elements (13) I'd probably use Variations to start but that's gone from later versions. I believe PSE 2020 has a Quick Effect called Cross Processing. ON1 Effects has a filter called Cross Processing. In Photoshop I might use curves or in Lightroom split toning and/or a LUT or profile. And there are a whole raft of actions and tutorials available with different peoples ideas of cross processing. So pick your image and create a cross processing effect by whatever method you choose and let's see that "Element of Surprise". Posting a before and after version would be great and, if you can remember, the method you used to get from one to the other, If you want some inspiration there are several Flickr groups devoted to cross processing - some film only, some digital. I'll add a separate post with some examples I've done with different software or different methods with the same software. As always, play around, stay safe and have fun! Tony

Here are a few quick examples of digital cross-processing of the same image using different software or methods - some I like, some I don't and some could be toned down a bit, at least to my taste - but you get the idea. It also depends a lot on the starter image and this one was just a random selection from my collection. Looking forward to seeing what you come up with. Tony

I'd probably use Variations to start but that's gone from later versions. Yes, you are right. Adobe removed it back in PSE 12. Their recommended alternative is Auto Smart Tone (available in Quick and Expert modes). Right once again. This feature was introduced back in PSE 12 -- Quick Mode > Effects > Cross Process. Enhanced Quick Mode

I think I missed the point of this challenge so tried again using split toning in LR. I especially like Sepiana and Lillias' ship submissions. Original
Split tones
Will try some more as it definitely is interesting seeing the different results.

Very nice work everyone and great to see the different styles and how they were done. Won't attempt to pick out any favourites as they are all very different but I do like sail boats so had to add another one! This was done in Topaz Adjust 5 having just watched a video on Cross Processing in Topaz Adjust done I believe by the person who developed the filters. I can highly recommend it www.youtube.com/watch?v=k8vBJLH31VcTony
