At last! Windows 10 can now see CR3 and many other raw files as thumbnails in file explorer. Later more raw codices will be added. If you are running the latest version of Windows (version 1903 or later), go to the Windows store and install the free app, “Raw Image Extention”. After installing, set your folder view to medium, large or extra large icons to see the thumbnails. In addition to seeing thumbnails, the app also allows you to open and view the raw files in "photos" or any other photo viewing app of your choice.* Kind regards Chris PS. More info here: www.howtogeek.com/427588/how-to-open-raw-image-files-on-windows-10/#:~:text=You%20can%20open%20a%20RAW,Install%E2%80%9D%20to%20install%20the%20extension. * You are actually viewing the jpg image that is embedded in the raw file.

Interesting although I've always used FastPictureViewer Codecs that work for all my raw files although I suspect they are no longer getting updated - my latest update is 3 years old. The one file format I do use and can't "see" is PSD so if that app works for PSD files I maybe should consider switching.

I have no problems getting preview thumbnails for my .psd files.

Tony, I have Fast Picture Viewer codec pack, but the problem is it hasn't been updated since 2017 and it can't see CR3 files. After I installed "Raw Image Extension" I can now see CR3 files in Windows explorer which is a great help. I did not uninstall Fast Picture viewer codec pack.
Regarding seeing PSD files with Fast Picture Viewer Codec pack, try the following.
1- Make sure you have the latest version of Fast Picture Viewer cocec pack version 3.8.0.97 2- Uninstall. 3- Reboot 4- Delete the Windows thumbnail cache 5- Reinstall Fast picture viewer codec pack.
From time to time I have had to do this when I lose the ability to see psd files
If you still have a problem then check that the psd files you have saved are with the option to maximise compatibility. Of course to see thumbnails you need to set the folder view to medium, large or extra large icons.
Kind regards Chris

Thanks Chris - I'll give that a try (I have the same system as Sepiana and she can see them and I can't so your suggestion sounds good). Where would I find the Windows thumbnail cache?

FastStone Image Viewer (current V7.5) supports the viewing of most raw files (including Canon *.CR3) and many other image formats, including Adobe *.PSD files. It remains a free download for personal use although only available for Windows OS computers (no Mac version].

Tony Tony, I can confirm it. What Chris suggested will work. I remember having this problem in the days of Windows XP and 7. I contacted FastPictureViewer Support and that's what they told me to do. I use Disk Cleanup to delete the Windows thumbnail cache -- Files to delete>Thumbnails. But I think you can take another route -- navigate the path below and delete the files starting with "thumbcache". Chris will be able to confirm this. C:\Users\[Your User Name]\AppData\Local\Microsoft\Windows\Explorer\. . .

Tony, I use Ccleaner to delete the thumbnail cache. Otherwise open my PC. right click your C drive/properties/click disk cleanup and select thumbnails from the list to delete. I am sure that Fast picture codec can be repaired.
Peter, thanks for mentioning Faststone Image viewer. It's a great programme!
Kind regards Chris

Thanks to all - followed the instructions from Chris and I can now see PSD files again. Must admit that in recent times I've tended to save as tiff files as they seem to be more universally recognized and I'm not sure that there's anything in a PSD that I'm missing when I save as a TIFF - but that's another topic ... Thanks again Tony

I'm not sure that there's anything in a PSD that I'm missing when I save as a TIFF That would be a good topic to explore; it would be interesting to see a thorough investigative comparison. For whatever reason, more and more non-Adobe programs have the ability and option to work with PSD.

Peter, thanks for mentioning Faststone Image viewer. It's a great programme! Kind regards Chris Agreed ! With FastStone, so long as it is an image file, you can leave off messing around in Explorer; I will add this, XnView is a great compliment to FastStone, as it can do three things that FastStone cannot = 1. batch write embedded jpeg comments (FastStone does very well writing one at a time), 2. Read/Write/Edit IPTC, 3. Read/Write/Edit keyword tags

Adobe Bridge can be downloaded free:
It works with any PS and PSE version and as far as I know has none of the above discussed problems. I don't know about CR3, have no experience with it.

Just adding some clarification to go along with the purpose of the OP. photoshopelementsandmore.com/post/70771This is not an Elements issue (or a Photoshop issue); this is a Windows-related issue. Windows cannot generate preview thumbnails for RAW or PSD files. This means that, when you look at a RAW or a PSD file using Windows Explorer (in the Pictures Library/folder), all you get is a generic thumbnail. You will need to install a Codec which will generate preview thumbnails for these files.
