This ended up being a tough challenge. I wanted to go outdoors and shoot the wildflowers at our local nature preserve. Mother Nature had other plans for me -- rain, rain, nothing but rain for over seven days. What was I supposed to do? Sit this challenge out? No. Break the rules and post something from my archives? No. (As the host, I need to set a good example.) Fortunately, my pampered orchids came to the rescue. They are thriving this year. I guess all the rain, humidity, high temperatures make them feel they are in a tropical paradise.

I took this photograph a couple of days ago; we at first thought it was some kind of wild Orchid, perhaps Pyramid Orchid? Can anyone identify it? It is quite a small plant on a single stem and the head is about three inches in height - you have to get close up to see the beautiful markings on the individual flowers.  |

Helen -- What a crisp and sharp image! Great interpretation of this theme. I just love the flowers in this urban context.
Dennis -- Great capture! You found a jewel of a flower here. I may be wrong but this flower could be a Common-Spotted orchid.
Janice -- One of my favorite flowering trees, Crepe Myrtle. They just brighten up the landscape even on a rainy day. Your layout did justice to these beautiful flowers. I love it.
EDIT: Dennis, it looks like it is indeed a Common-Spotted orchid.

I'm a bit late posting this as I was in a Cyber dead zone for the last week. Flowers are one of my favourite subjects and I just had to stop and take some pictures of these gorgeous wild poppies growing around the harbour in Ilwaco, Wa this morning.  |

Pauline, as the saying goes -- "Better late than never". These wild poppies are gorgeous indeed. I really like the touch of blue (purple?) among the bold red of the poppies. |
