This tutorial is mostly about using a layer mask. I sometimes struggle with a layer mask when I haven't used one for a while, so I hope this tutorial will be a good reminder about the basics, and also a jumping off point for some inventive creations!
The basic idea is to create the effect of cutting out a shape and/or text to achieve a three-dimensional look. It uses only graphic elements built into Elements, but of course you are free to incorporate any images you want. There are really only a few steps, so I hope you will give it a try. It is certainly a technique that belongs in everyone's toolkit!
Here is what I came up with:

I think the only time I have used the shape tool is when it is part of a CE Challenge. Thanks for the refresher, Tom.

Yes, me too. There are a lot of shapes there that could be very useful, so it's good to have a reason to revisit it.

Still Cut Out but thought I'd try and reverse the image to appear outwards. 1, Background image 2, Background Layer (I used Grey) with gradient tool 3, Background image copy layer then magic wand the background then layer inverse and copy image to new layer 4, Apply layer style (drop shadow) to both background layer and image. 5, With the move tool move gradient layer up or down to adjust background shading.

Another nice one, Lillias. Your first one brought to mind this image that was taken at an old bus stop in Italy.....

Funny - as I stare at these, the cutouts go from cut out to on top - optical illusions, I guess
