Kaleidoscope
This Creative Effects Challenge will show you how to create a Kaleidoscope from your images using Layers in Photoshop Elements or the full version of Photoshop.
Starting Image:
Final Image:
Please read thru the entire tutorial before you start.
Let’s get started:
1. Open an image that you want to create a Kaleidoscope from.
2. Crop the Image to square. A square image will work the best for this challenge.
3. Duplicate the layer (Ctrl/CMD+j).
4. Change the blend mode of this layer to Darken.
5. Duplicate the layer (Ctrl/CMD+j).
6. Go to Image>Rotate>Rotate Layer 90° Left.
7. Duplicate the layer (Ctrl/CMD+j).
8. Go to Image>Rotate>Rotate Layer 90° Left.
9. Duplicate the layer (Ctrl/CMD+j).
10. Go to Image>Rotate>Rotate Layer 90° Left.
11. At this point you should have added 4 layers.
For these next steps to work, all 4 layers need to be selected.
12. Select the top layer by clicking on it.
13. Next shift+click on the fourth one down. 4 layers are now selected.
14. Duplicate these 4 layers by pressing Ctrl/CMD+j while all the layers are still selected.
15. You should now have duplicated 4 layers.
16. With all of these new layers selected, go to Image>Rotate>Flip Layer Horizontal.
17. You are now finished and you can add a Hue/Saturation adjustment layer, a Brightness/Contrast adjustment layer, and/or a Levels adjustment layer to adjust the final version of this Kaleidoscope Creative Effects Challenge.
Final Layer Stack:

If you found all of these layers to be a little overwhelming – you can just run the provided action. The action set contains two versions. One for Elements 15 and newer (named Kaleidoscope), and one for older version of Elements without Layer Groups (named Kaleidoscope no layer Group). Either one will work in any version of Photoshop CC.
