A short while ago there was a post about the divide blend mode and how to simulate it in Photoshop Elements and it referenced a Comic Book Effect tutorial so I thought I'd give it a try. It turns out to be quite simple and, as written out below, works in all versions of Elements and Photoshop. As always feel free to add any other steps. 1) Open an image - anything works 2) Duplicate the background layer and Filter>Other>High Pass - the setting depends on the image size but aim for an outline - I found around 8 worked 3) Duplicate this layer and set the blend mode to Color Dodge (the original inverted this layer and used the Divide blend mode but this is equivalent and works in PSE as well as PS) 4) Add a levels adjustment layer and move the black slider up to around the start of the histogram and the grey slider a bit further up. 5) Duplicate the background image, move it to the top of the layer stack and set the blend mode to Hard Light. 6) Blur the top layer to create the desired effect - you can use Surface Blur as in the original tutorial or Gaussian Blur I found works just as well. Here's what my layer stack looked like: And here are a couple of before and afters: Have fun - looking forward to seeing your Comic Books! Tony

Tried it on a phone picture that I had taken of my grandson the other night....will send it to him next. Fun tut! That worked really well Helen -I was going to use a person but wasn’t happy with the result - they came out too spotty - So I switched to chickens ! Tony

Thanks, Tony. He is kind of naturally "spotty" so it worked well. Most of my "people" pictures are of my grandkids....so more may follow. Tried it on my submission for the weekly challenge (another phone picture)....like the way the trees came out.

Images from Pexels. Background texture by Erica Paree. For the lady I used Linear Light for the blend mode instead of Hard Light as per the tutorial.

Nice work everyone. Do like the lady with the Linear Light blend mode from BillieJean. Will have to try some of the other Blend Modes of that type to see what they do..

These are all great, but Helen - the effect of using a photo of a house really works for me.
