With just the nine entries this time around I will restrict myself to a top 3. Standing jointly on the podium, in the order presented, are: deany with By Candlelight i.ibb.co/vDrJN17/by-candlelight.jpgI have made no secret over the years for my admiration of Deany's work. I find it lyrical and beautiful, and this one is no exception. Every element works; there is a cohesive theme with all subject elements included from the matches to light the lantern to the glasses to read the book. I even got inspired to search online for the book (Storms and Starlight?) in expectation this gives extra relevance. This, to my mind, is great photography. it makes you curious and wanting to look beyond. kathylee with Day's End i.ibb.co/5rmhzyc/800-not-signat-IMG-3752-sat.jpgThis is all about the texture. It was interesting to do a compare and contrast between both of Kathy's beachside entries. Why did I prefer this over the other (albeit not by much - they are both lovely)? What grabs me is the added detail in the foreground; every grain of sand and every crack in the wood adds interest, and then the line classically leads you out to the shoreline and out to sea. And the winner is fotofrank with Just Before the Storm i.ibb.co/dBMmf84/stratton-brook-storm-small.jpgWhat a stunning image. The infra-red silvering of the subject tree demands attention, and this is offset by the dramatic burst of sunlight, and then your eye travels on and you see the gathering clouds. Somehow Frank has combined foreboding and hope, drama and stillness; all in one image. This deserves to be hung somewhere big in pride of place.

Thanks for judging, Alex. I appreciate reading your critiques as much as I appreciate the images you have chosen. Congratulations to Dean and Kathy for two carefully composed images. Reading Alex's thoughts on your picture made me imagine it LARGE and framed, Frank. It would definitely have a commanding presence.
