This tutorial is taken from a video by George Pierson of ‘How To Gurus’.
The whole video tutorial can be found Here
Below the video he also provides a link to the textures he used to complete his tutorial.
Items required:- An image and one possibly two textures depending on the look you are going for.
Please note...
I followed his tutorial through the first 5 steps I’ve listed here and then I deviated from the tutorial.
If you wish to follow his tut; through to completion please view the video.
Commencing at 3:41 mins into the video will take up at the point from which I diverged below.
Let’s start...
1. Open an image and duplicate it by right clicking on the BG layer and choosing Duplicate Layer.
2. Convert that layer to B&W with good contrast.
To do that go to Enhance>Convert to Black and White and look through the various Styles and pick one which gives the best contrast then click OK.
3. Duplicate that layer and change it to a negative -
To do that go to Filters>Adjustment>Invert.
Blend this layer with the one below with the Colour Dodge blend mode.
You image will seem to disappear except possibly for a few dark spots.
4. Go back to Filter>Other>Minimum.
I would suggest choosing a Radius of somewhere between 2 and 7 to give a good line drawing effect.
5. Create a stamped layer by means of the 4 key combo of Ctrl+Shift+Alt+E (PC) Cmd+Shift+Opt+E (Mac).
This merges all the visible layers into one at the top of the layers stack. You can hide the other layers by clicking the little eye icon at the side of each layer.
As I mention at the start this is the point at which I deviate somewhat from the original tut;
6. Bring your texture in and place it below the stamped layer in the layers panel.
Resize to suit and apply the multiply blend mode to the stamped layer.
Depending on the look you want you could be done right here or you can bring in a grunge texture and place it at the top of the layers panel giving it a colour burn blend mode.
I introduced 2 other textures to my page.
Remember you can also use a levels adjustment layer and vary opacities. Experiment with blend modes too for different looks.
I chose to place my finished image on a postcard texture from spoongraphics (links below for the postcard and grunge textures)
Decorate your page to your liking and your are finished.
